Do you know who I am? No, I I can't say that I do. I don't know how to put this, but... I'm kind of a big deal. Really? People know me. I'm very happy for you. I'm very important. Uh I have Many leather bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.
Nat Tanchich 0:30
When I tell you someone's a narcissist, you probably get a certain image. Someone who's obsessed with themselves, takes lots of selfies, thinks they're hot shit and better than everyone else. It's something we see a lot, not just in movies or TV shows, but also in day-to-day life. Probably even in your Insta feed. You might look at someone who's a bit shallow and go, Ugh, they are such a narcissist. Heck, you've probably called your ex one. But what is a narcissist really? And how do you know you're actually in a relationship with one? Nat Tencich with you and on this episode of The Hookup, we're gonna hear some pretty raw stories of what it's like to date someone with narcissistic personality disorder.
Nat Tanchich 1:18
You'll figure out what signs to look for, and also how to date and trust again if you've been with someone toxic. A heads up, there's a lot of talk of emotional abuse in this episode. So if it brings anything up for you, we've got some support numbers that you can call in our show notes. So what is a narcissist, if not just your common self-obsessed hottie? Clinical psychologist Dr. Jared White says it's a self esteem disorder.
Dr. Jared White 1:45
What you're looking at is someone that has this disorder in their self esteem. They basically are extremely insecure, but that's got a front of total security and confidence. I think I think you'll see that it's really on a continuum. So you've got narcissistic personality disorder at the extreme end, but there's it goes all the way down to some some kind of this selfishness, you know?

What exactly defines a narcissistic personality disorder?

Dr. Jared White 2:10
Um, and you'll see that narcissism, there's a little bit of narcissism in a lot of people.
Nat Tanchich 2:15
Probably in almost everyone, right?
Dr. Jared White 2:17
Exactly. I mean, if you look at the criteria, we've all got a little bit of that potential in us. I guess the key difference is whether you have insight into that or not. With narcissistic personality disorder you have to hit at least five of nine criteria that are in uh the clinical diagnostic manual.
Nat Tanchich 2:35
Okay, so just quickly, that's a grandiose sense of self-importance, preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love, a belief that they're special and unique and can only be understood by or should associate with other special people. An intense need for excessive admiration, a sense of entitlement that they should get and have whatever they want, a tendency to use others to achieve their own ends. A lack of empathy demonstrated through an unwillingness to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others. Envy of others, or the belief that others are envious of them. Arrogant or conceited behavior and attitudes. Can I get a yikes, please? Yeah, you don't want to end up in a relationship with that.
Nat Tanchich 3:28
But the thing about narcissists, they're really good at cloaking those things. Without realizing at first, Hookup Listener Jade found herself in a relationship with someone just like that. Her ex made her feel like she was going crazy.
Unknown 3:45
I met this guy at a party. He was an acquaintance of a friend. When I met him, he was really charming. I wasn't attracted to him at all. And then we we started hanging out as friends. And then he started to relentlessly pursue me for probably two or three months. And after a while I sort of like he was saying the right things and he was very intelligent, um, all well very well put together and I sort of thought, you know, I'll give this a shot. And so from that everything was all starting to go great. Um and he always spoke up about himself really well. Like he had a great job, he drove a fancy car, um, like he had his life sorted, um, and he just knew the right things to say. And I started to fall for him.
Unknown 4:28
And then after a few months I think he realised I was hooked in. And any time I was sort of seem it seemed like I was hooked in, he would sort of just either cut me off completely or just just be negative towards me, be negative about other people towards me.
