This is an ABC podcast.

It might not come as much of a surprise, but I love love. Nothing makes me gooey like hearing about people connecting in authentic ways. And hey, it helps if it's an amazing story to boot. A meet cute that felt like fate. Best friends finally realising they're soulmates. Love triumphing against all odds. It's the fuzzy stuff, you know? I'm Nat Tanchich and welcome to our mini-series, Love Bites. Bite-sized, rom-com-worthy love stories as long as a song. Usually on The Hookup, I educate you on relationship and sex issues and help solve your romantic dilemmas. But for the next little while, we're also injecting a little love into your life with a rom-com-worthy tale that I hope makes you believe again.

How did Vanessa first meet the girl of her dreams at the Christian youth camp?

Nat Tanchich 0:52
You know, those kinds of stories where it felt like fate or the boost you get from a relationship weathering against all odds. I don't know. I just think we need that right now. Get ready for a love story that triumphed against some serious odds. When Vanessa was a teenager, she was sent to a Christian youth camp where she met the girl of her dreams. Unfortunately, as you can probably guess, that was not allowed. So they had to woo each other in secret with playlists.

I was 15 when I went to this Christian facility kind of thing where it was like an all women's program and they just helped women

in need.

And I'd been there for a few years. It had turned more into a cult while I was there. Like people were supposed to be like graduating, but they would kind of dangle it in front of their faces. And like, it seemed as if it was so that people could keep working for them and stuff.

Why did they have to keep their relationship secret and how did they use playlists to communicate?

Unknown 1:54
but i was like one of those people so i rose up through the ranks and became a leader there and while i was a leader there this um this chick came into the program and i don't know she was really cool and we like hit it off straight away we were just like friends but after a while i kind of realized that i was developing feelings for her and i was like oh goodness like this is like so wrong because i was in a christian my place and also being a leader and stuff I just felt like I wasn't supposed to be doing that so I kept it hidden for a long time and then eventually I just felt so bad about it that I went and told like the director of the program. She was obviously very annoyed about that and kind of got me to stop talking to this girl.
Unknown 2:41
So after about a month or so of not talking, we kind of found different ways that we could communicate. So we started this creative Spotify playlist where we would talk to each other with songs, song titles and stuff. and try and find ways that we'd be able to communicate to each other until like one time she like she had to do this thing called adventure out um where she like volunteered and for these like adventure programs and things and it's like i was supposed to like go there and help her with that with a few of the other girls from the program and um while we were there We were all just having such a good time. It was the first time that I was able to really speak to her in front of people.
Unknown 3:24
And when we were driving back to the foundation, she was like, oh, can we stop in at my grandma's and just say hi to her? And so I was like, yeah, no worries. We can do that. So we went there, and it was just such a nice time.

What adventure‑type events helped them finally speak openly about their feelings?

Unknown 3:36
that I'd spent with her grandma and stuff and then eventually like had to drop them back and then at church the next day Jazza's grandma came up to me and was just like oh I know what's happening here and I just want you to know that you're welcome anytime at mine it can be like a safe space for you guys So on the weekends when she's supposed to be going home, I would pick her up from down the street and we would go to her grandma's and we would just like spend the weekend together. And it was just like the only time that we felt like we could actually be free and hang out. And yeah, and that's when we kind of like realised that we both like really liked each other. Like there were like hints of it before, but it was way more apparent when we were hanging out and actually able to speak to each other.
