Warning. Sex and adult themes. Hi, Hannah Riley here. All good things in moderation, right? Including porn. What if you're watching it for hours at a time and it's breaking down your relationship and real-life sex just isn't doing it for you anymore? A warning in this podcast we'll be discussing some very adult themes. Alinda Small is a relationships counsellor and a sex therapist. She says porn isn't the problem, but that for some people it becomes an addiction, like any other.
Alinda Small 0:57
Well, they're the um men predominantly that are the ones that I'm seeing the most of that um have been watching porn for a long time and it starts impeding on their personal life. So, you know, they can't have a a sexual relationship. Quite often they have um erectile dysfunction. Um it's consuming for a lot of them when they get really on this sort of addictive cycle, it becomes almost um all encompassing. So they find themselves wasting hours and hours and they need to get a bigger hit and it gets you know the ante gets up and up the whole time. So Absolutely.
Hannah Riley 1:30
And I mean, I think when we're talking about this, when we're talking about the potentially negative effect that consuming porn in a certain way can have on people's lives, people are going to be wondering, Are you anti porn?
Alinda Small 1:40
No. No, not at all. It's when it becomes consuming and it's affecting your life, then that's when it's a problem. And so how uh
Hannah Riley 1:48
from someone suffering with this How does it affect the different aspects of their life. Could you talk us through how that happens?
Alinda Small 1:56
Yeah, so they usually start off watching porn when they're quite young and it becomes a practice that they like and that's their sort of, you know, their little private world. And as they get older they find that they need to watch a little bit more, it needs to get a bit darker. And then, you know, that heat gets higher. So it's a novel factor that's really uh kicked off in our brains for sex. And so, you know, the dopamine levels go off with a novel factor. And the more you expose and almost saturate yourself with it, you're desensitized. So you have to keep watching more and it doesn't give you the hit. It's a bit like, you know, if you're drinking, you need more and more and more if you want to get to that level.
Alinda Small 2:29
And it's a similar path that they have with porn. So what it does is it affects their lives that they waste time, they, you know, uh can't get off it. They can't have a normal relationship with a girl. Um, this sort of sexual scrip is based on Porn. Um, and it's just it's really debilitating for them.
Hannah Riley 2:47
Is it the same as a drinking or gambling addiction?
Alinda Small 2:50
Yes. So that's the research that's been done, predominantly in the States at the moment, is looking at and and this is addiction, this is not just someone who's watching a couple of hours porn, you know, a day. This is someone who's really got a problem.

How does Alinda Small define porn escalation and its early signs?

Alinda Small 3:01
And
Hannah Riley 3:02
we should say using the word addiction when it comes to porn is a really hotly contested issue. Why do you think that is?
Alinda Small 3:08
Yeah, look I think it's new. I mean it's we're only just finding out about it and it's really difficult um because a lot of the studies that are done, there's very few controls and that's really what most sort of psychological studies are based on, a control of a sort of a a population that isn't affected. Most boys start watching porn when they're eleven. So it's really f hard to find people who haven't had porn exposure. So it's really new and and really it's a recent phenomenon because of the internet um speed. And that's what's really sort of upped this addiction to it because it's fast, it's available twenty four hours, you know, it's they can have lots going at once.
Hannah Riley 3:44
It's the perfect climate to kind of get sucked into it as opposed to, you know treat it responsibly, I suppose. Um going back a step, you were saying that it could potentially pro be a problem that um uh someone's sexual script comes from porn.
