The doctor looks at me and says, You're peeing eleven times a day. Then you may have something wrong with your prostate. So what we need to do. Some of you are ahead of me. I pulled down my pants and I walked over to the observation table. He knocked me down to my elbows. And then He stuck his hand in. And this was the actual sound I made. I went,
ooh. It's time we had a chat about the prostate. It might be something you only hear your granddad complaining about when he can't pee, or something you're afraid a doctor will have to unceremoniously finger one day. Nat Tenchich here, and I'm here to tell you this little gland in the groin is super important, and you'll want to know all about it. Not just for your health, but for your pleasure. First up, let's get a bit more of a definition. What is this thing and what does it do? Here's Sexual Health GP Dr. George Foggensm.
It's a about the size of a walnut and it sits just underneath the bladder in men. Its main job? is to make most of the liquid that comes out with an ejaculation and that liquid is to keep the sperm safe and happy until they can find an egg. It makes pre-cum, it makes about 70% of the volume of semen, exactly. And So yeah, you've got the seminal vesicles which feed into the prostate and then the prostate gland itself. So when a guy is having sex or is aroused in one way or another, that's when the prostate can switch on and start doing its job and start making the the volume of the of the um semen ready for ejaculation. So that's that's pretty much prostate one hundred one. So I suppose the thing about the prostate is that that that like that's its role, right?
And it's Testosterone kind of drives us.
What is the prostate and what role does it play in semen production?
And the thing about the prostate is that it doesn't just sit underneath the bladder, but the tube that drains the bladder in men goes straight through the middle of it. So this is one of the reasons that the prostate causes a lot of issues for guys. So That's why doctors like myself have, you know, that this is how we come to meet men who have problems with their prostates because usually it's because they have issues when they're trying to pee.
We're running out of time. Capitul. Yeah, I could be sh. Now it's okay and this. My prostate's flaring up like a freaking ticket torch.
Now it might seem like an old man problem, but it's worth knowing about your prostate health now, because things can go very sideways. If
you're young. Like and when I say young, you're talking to an old dude here, so people under the age of forty generally don't have issues with the prostate unless they get an infection. And so the most common infection you're gonna get in the prostate is chlamydia. Very common S T I God bless it. Um, if you're having anal sex you can also get bugs from poo setting up inside the prostate as well. But for young guys, that's the main issue with the prostate. Now as you get older, the prostate can grow. Now the prostate's a little bit like an orange or a mandarin. It's got a really thick outer coating. So when it grows, it can only grow inwards. And that means that the flow of urine It gets harder and harder to pass through.
Now, ladies, you've probably not had this experience, but if you've if for the guys in the room, they'll generally know this. They'll see an old dude go up to the urinal. And they put their hand up on the wall 'cause they know they're gonna be there for a while. And they stand around and stand around and stand around and then they spend the rest of the the next five minutes peeing on their shoes. Um, that's usually because they have an issue with the prostate. It t it You know, it's like a kink in the in the in a straw. And it's very hard to get the urine out. So that's one thing and that's called benign prosthetic hyperplasia. So it's it's not nasty, but it's really darn annoying. Бат In a smaller percentage of men is the risk of prostate cancer.
And this is the area that I get in contact with a lot of men who come and see me because they're worried Do I have prostate cancer or they're worried about their particular risk of prostate cancer?
