Now, since it's our first time with you, we're talking about first times. Do you remember the first time you had sex? Did it live up to your no doubt sky high expectations?
Because a lot of us feel this massive pressure the first time needs to be this amazing rose petals scattered on the bed, some Sufjan Stevens playing in the background, and that you're both going to come within two seconds of taking your shirts off. Well, if you're anything like me, you'll probably know that that's not the way it goes and that this pressure cooker of anxiousness and anticipation can lead to some pretty poor decision-making. For my first time, that involved going out and buying some fishnet stockings before the big night, trying a little bit too hard with that. And the whole experience was so awkward that he said afterwards, you can still call yourself a virgin if you want. And at the time, I was pretty pissed off that he said that.
But now looking back, I think he's kind of right. Because it is totally up to you what you define as your sexual debut and how much or how little it means to you. Because the traditional notion of losing your virginity, when you think about it, is so dumb. You're not losing anything. It's not like a set of keys. You don't find like a million virginities under the couch every time you move it. Or like, does the person who took it keep it in a special little box with your name on it? And what classifies a virgin anyway? If you define it as penis in vagina and you're a lesbian and there's no penis in the equation, do you just stay a virgin forever until the day you die? Or if you have anal sex as a gay guy, that counts, but as a straight woman, it doesn't?
