Why does Adam say most people in the West over‑consume sugar and refined carbs?
I'm going to make a prediction right now, and that is that you probably, if you live in a Western country, so Europe, United States, in fact, most places on the planet, probably eat too much processed food or sugary foods and probably more than you would like. And the reason why I say that is that statistically, the average person consumes way, way, way more sugar and refined carbs than than their body ever needs. It's Adam here and in this hypnosis session I was working with a client that was eating way too much of pastries and cakes and pies and sweet things like chocolate and it really wasn't good for their health and they wanted to change that. But here's the interesting thing. If you try and use willpower, it has the presupposition that you want the thing, but you're not allowed it.
And generally that doesn't last because you're going to have a moment of weakness and then you're just going to binge on the thing. And that's not ideal. What this session does is it gives it a completely different connotation and it uses a pretty disgusting metaphor. Now, I want you to imagine if there was a parasite. Now, you could imagine a parasite as an intestinal worm. You could imagine it as something like from the Aliens movies. But just imagine there's a creature inside you, but it only feeds on sugar. And like many parasites do, they can influence the host. So let's just say that your cravings for sugar are not your cravings, but just imagine it's the parasite inside you is making you want to have more sugary things because that's what makes the parasite grow.
Now, if that was true, every time you had a craving for something sweet, if you were very aware of that parasite, you would then have a choice to make. Do you feed the parasite and give it even more influence or do you starve the parasite? Now, this is clearly a metaphor and it's unlikely that you have some kind of parasite that craves sugar. But Just like a virtual gastric band can have the metaphor of a smaller stomach, this has a metaphor of a sugar-craving parasite and it then gives you the ability to separate, using a cognitive behavioral therapy technique, the thought from the action. So the thought is, oh, I'd like some sugar, and the action is, ah, but... this would mean feeding this parasite, therefore I don't want it.
And if you can get to a stage where you don't want the sugar, that's a very different thing than you want it, but you're trying to use willpower or self-control to not have it. So I would encourage you to embrace the idea of this. It's just an imagination. It's just a metaphor. But the more graphic you make and the more disgusting you make the imagined parasite within you, the easier it will be to not want sugary foods. So I would encourage you to do that. Obviously, if you quite like having sugar and it doesn't really affect your health, I wouldn't listen to this one if I were you. Just skip and listen to a different one.
How does the “sugar‑craving parasite” metaphor change the way cravings are perceived?
But if you want to reduce your sugar consumption, this might be a useful hypnosis session for you. It was created for an individual. Some of the things that they craved, like fruit pies and pecan pies and chocolate and cakes and pastries, might not be the same things for you. It might be jellied sweets or it might be fizzy drinks for you. It might be something different. So think of what would be a desirable thing for you currently and then see how you feel if it's the idea that you're feeding this horrible, disgusting parasite within. So... That said, it was creative for someone else. Ignore any suggestions that aren't quite right for you. And if you like the idea of working with me directly, I would encourage you to either click the link in the show notes or check out my website, adamcox.co.uk.
And there you will be able to book a consultation call to explore working with me. For now, though, find a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be distracted or disturbed. Relax and enjoy the session.
Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in that slow long relaxing breath, and as you exhale, allow yourself to release
