And together, and in our conversation, Zada shares how their operating principle is from the troops, with the troops, and for the troops and how they incorporate trust when the environment is quite complex and the decision need to be made very fast and reliable. Hello, Sarah, and welcome to the In Between Tech and Trust Podcast. Eva, thanks for having me. Very excited to talk to you today. Before we jump into the intersection of technology and trust, like I'm really curious of what you're currently working on because the Bundeswehr Cyber Innovation Hub is something that is like right at the uh liminal space of the technological development.
Is there a way that you can explain to us of what your team works on and maybe also provide us a glimpse into some extraordinary projects that you and your colleagues work on at the moment.
How are biobots and cockroach‑based “Autobugs” used for reconnaissance in defence?
I can. The uh Cyber Innovation Hub of the Bundeswehr is the official innovation unit of the German armed forces. And it's our job to bring innovation into the Bundeswehr faster by working closely together with the troops. And in our innovation projects, you asked me about we solve current military challenges together with innovators from the troops, soldiers. And the startup ecosystem. And one of the most extraordinary projects we are currently working on is called Autobugs. Together with our soldiers and the Startup Swarm Biotactics, we are exploring whether biobots can support reconnaissance missions. And in this case, these biobots are real cockroaches. The cockroaches you don't want to meet in your hotel room.
And they are equipped with small electronic backpacks that can be used to steer and control them. And the idea behind it is very simple. Instead of sending soldiers into dangerous areas, into buildings, these systems could enter first and send back information. And the most interesting part of it is that we are not only looking on an individual cockroach, we are observing how they operate in swarms. And I think this is a very good example of how the cyber innovation hub of the Bundeswehr brings together soldiers, technology, and startups to develop military capabilities. I mean that's extraordinary.
I mean, you jumped right into the technological aspects to it, also of how you reiterate innovation into your own organization. And now if you think about the trust aspect, particularly when you collaborate with the troops or also within your organization. What comes to your mind when you think about the intersection of technology, trust and innovation? And also how do you handle it particularly in your specific role?
Yeah, for me, trust is a central part of technology, especially in defense.
Why is trust considered an operational requirement for military AI systems?
Soldiers need to know that a system or a technology will work when it really matters. For example, if we think of a software that controls an unmanned system, let's say a drone that is searching for mines, soldiers need to trust that the Area is safe before they walk through. And that's why we test technologies together with soldiers from the very beginning, because in defense technology can directly affect soldiers' lives. And um
particularly when you collaborate with startups and you're in exactly that high-functioning environment where it comes down to like The Essential decision making, sometimes also under pressure. The decision-making structural complexity in your uh institution might differ from the startup thinking kind of way. What does innovation mean in your context and how do you collaborate with fast-paced organization, particularly when they are at a young stage of their product development?
For me, innovation in the Bundeswehr is about creating impact under real conditions. That means finding innovative disruptive solutions, testing them early with soldiers, and seeing what develops really military capabilities.
