Welcome to Jags AM. I'm Penani Stephens. Mark Duffner and John Ogier are in with me today as we bring you your first show of the offseason. We've taken about a month off to kind of look back at things. Super Bowl, the rest of the playoffs have gone on, so now it's time to get back into what the Jaguars are doing this offseason and what some of the big news that happened over the past couple of weeks. So let's go over our big things for you. Our first big thing, number one, is going to be back in action. There was a huge coaching shift throughout the NFL. About a third of the head coaching positions were open this year, and there was some Questions about whether the coordinators here in Jacksonville were going to be coming back now.
How important is continuity in the Jaguars coaching staff?
John fortunately looks like Grant Udinski and Anthony Campanile are going to be here again for their second season. John, what's a big big part of why it's so important to kind of keep the staff here as long as you can?
Well, continuity, and I'm anxious to hear Duff's thoughts on it because he's been in it and knows how important that is. But look, they got things going last year. Grant Udinski is very important for his ability to get with Trevor Lawrence during the week and show him what's going to be happening on the field. He's going to be a head coach in this league someday, probably in 2027. He's too good a coach not to be. And look, Campanelli, Duff, the players, I've been around a lot of coaches. I'm not sure I've been around a coach that players love playing for and respond to and buy into quite as much as camp.
What are the key free agency considerations for the Jaguars this year?
I'm sure they bought into you, but there is something to that player's belief and the players believe in both of these guys.
No question about it. And I mean, that's huge for this coaching staff to stay together. Consistency, which you talked about, is the best. And both of these guys have, I think, great futures right now. The energy, the enthusiasm that they demonstrate, the connection with the players, off the chart. And you're right. I see the following that the players have with Campanile, especially on defense. I mean, defense has a lot of emotion and enthusiasm and belief like that. big big way yeah buy-in kai we've talked about it before everything coaches do x's and o's wise is great to me if players believe in them that's 90 of it and they believe in both of these guys
Yeah, and we saw what they did in year one, so I'm sure we're expecting even better in year two. Our big thing number two is going to be free agency. We've talked about some of the big names on this team, Travis Etienne, of course, Devin Lloyd. Both those guys are going to be free agents, but there also needs to be a focus on this roster building because, as mentioned, this is going to be only the second season with this current regime. They're still trying to build their perfect team. Duff, when you look at this roster, where's a position group that they need to focus on during free agency?
Well, I think you've always got to look at how you can affect and protect the quarterback. So first and foremost, I think affecting the quarterback, if we could gain another edge rusher and also some interior defensive line help. To me, you know, we certainly demonstrated the ability to stop the run, but to affect the quarterback internally and externally, meaning on the edge and inside,
What is the latest on Travis Hunter's role with the Jaguars?
would be big, big things. And then anything you can do to continue to protect Trevor Lawrence in terms of the offensive line. And then I think you can never not have a cornerback or a guy on the edge in the secondary to help. So those areas would be ones I think we should focus on.
It's going to be interesting to see what happens. I'm not sure, unfortunately, that Lloyd and Etan will be back. So if you lose Lloyd, then all of a sudden you're wondering, do you need to bring in a lower-priced linebacker? You can find interior linebacker for less than Devin Lloyd will make. A veteran guy who can, you know, be savvy, who can help a foyer get them in and out of plays.
