What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Welcome to Jags AM. I'm Kainani Stephens. Brian Sexton and John Ogier are with me as we have our final show of the offseason. The offseason program is wrapping up and before we know it, it's going to be time for training camps. Let's go over our big things today, our final three. And the first one is switch up because they did mandatory minicamp last week. They still have a couple days of OTAs here in Jacksonville. And Coach Liam Cohen talked a little bit about switching things up.
I hadn't really. It was something that kind of came up organically over the winter time, I believe. Just when we made the decision to swap minicamp dates, that was kind of when the wheels started churning as to what can we do creatively for the last few days of off-season program to where maybe these guys are going to get somebody else's voice. you know, listening to and just being around other guys. I think, you know, once DeMarcus Ware will be here later, I mean, Hall of Fame, pass rusher, we're trying to improve in areas in which hopefully that can help provide some of that.
So Brian's part of the switch up is some veteran players, retired players coming in talking to the guys and three familiar ones here today.
Yeah, it's great to see Marseilles Lewis back here. It's been too long and he's one of those guys that I think his name belongs in the pride at some point in time. 170 starts in a Jaguars uniform. But here's what I love is that they're always thinking about small ways to get better, right? The big ways you think about are how you build the facilities for a football team and how you construct the roster and the salary cap. But it's... Built in the boring and the routine that you find these habits and these details that take a team from being good to being great and little things. Or it seems like a little thing that you bring a couple guys in and let them spend the week. But it could pay off down the line.
It could pay off in November of this season that guys were able to get something. These guys are innovators. And this is a really cool way to make the most of a week where most people would be thinking about, I only have two more days before I'm out for five weeks.
What changes did the Jaguars make to OTAs and why did they 'switch up' minicamp dates?
So I really liked it.
Yeah, the switch up was interesting. You put the mandatory, it's usually the last thing. They moved it up to last week. I think it's something to do with sort of the NFL body clock. You know, they're usually done by June 11th or 12th, and now it's the 17th and the 16th before you get done. So I think Liam wanted to make these last few days interesting. Remember way, way back when, when I was in elementary school, which was in the 1850s. It was hard in that last two or three days to concentrate. You're ready to get out and go play. These are big kids who play this game. And I think Liam sort of wanted to keep their attention in these last few days. And by the way, if they listen to Fred Taylor, Maurice Jones Drew, and Mercedes Lewis, you just might learn something, young fellas.
Couple of nuggets I think they might be able to share for sure. Let's go to our second big thing today, which is keeping it real. We got to speak with all of the assistant coaches yesterday and we'll hear from them throughout the show. But one of the bigger changes in the offseason, obviously running back Travis Etienne moving on to New Orleans that revamps the entire running back room and running backs coach Chad Morton talked about the motivation he has with his new players.
Him leaving, I miss him to death. Just the amount of time I spent with him, his growth, and what we're able to do for him. He's able to get life-changing money and opportunity. I'm so proud of that. But I told him too, we're going to do better than you. That's our goal. I told him that. We're going to try to put better numbers in you, have more success, outrush you. That's just how we are. We're all competitive, but that's the fun part of having a new group. Oh yeah, we're trying to crush you and we're trying to have people forget about you. That's the best part.
