What are the key takeaways from the Jaguars' 53-man roster cut announcement?

Kainani Stevens 0:16
Welcome into Jagzane. Brought to you by Fields Auto Group. I'm Konami Stevens. Brian Sexton and John Ozier are with me today. We made it through the preseason. Things are official. They cut down the roster yesterday, and now the regular season is upon us. Let's go over some of our big things. Brought to you by GEHA, Government Employees Health Association. Big thing number one is the 53. They did the roster cutdowns earlier this year. Normally it's on a Tuesday. They did it on Sunday this year. We're now down to the final 53. We'll figure out practice squad at some point, John, but not a ton of surprises necessarily, maybe one or two, but I think we kind of knew what the core was gonna look like.
John Oehser 0:49
Yeah, I think the big uh I don't know the surprise, the big move obviously was trading for Quinn Ears. Uh and then releasing Nick Mullins a backup quarterback. Uh to me, uh Brian, that just showed uh Look, they liked Nick Mullins. They liked what he brought. But if they can see a spot that they want to upgrade just a little bit, they're gonna be aggressive and they're gonna make moves, uh, and they're not gonna be passive. And I think that has if there has been a threat aside from winning and improving through this regime, it's been that they're willing to do what it takes and they're not going to be passive in moments where they have a chance to be active.
Brian Sexton 1:31
And I imagine that they're going to be very active today looking at the waiver wire. Eleven hundred players hit it last night and and we won't know who or how many claims they put in and never get, right? But they are looking at everyone. I heard Shortly after Tony Biselli took the job, he he made an offhanded comment about there will never be sacred cows. In other words, they will always be looking for opportunities, as John just mentioned, to go and upgrade the roster. Personally, I don't know a lot of places on the roster that you look at right now, John, and say, Well, we can't line up and play good football. I I think there may be a guy here or there, but personally I think they're at a point at a point where
Brian Sexton 2:08
The practice squad has great interest for me because I want to see how many of these guys come back. Guys they've had here all summer through the off season they've been developing. Guys they were legitimately excited about, like Jamari Taylor.
Kainani Stevens 2:19
Absolutely. Let's go to our second big thing which is insider info. What was cool about our final preseason game here was that we got Liam Cohen on the broadcast, Brian. I wanted to check in with you about it. Such a cool perspective to have the head coach kind of talking to you guys on a headset during the game.
Unknown 2:38
Oh, you want me to talk? Yeah. Oh, I think that's a positive play. Daniel's looking right. He's under pressure. Let's go. Brian Thomas Jr.

How did the trade for Quinn Ewers and the release of Nick Mullins reshape the roster?

Unknown 2:45
Got him again. Coach, give that man a jersey. He has been everywhere
John Oehser 2:49
tonight. He's earning it.
Unknown 2:52
Yeah, he is. He's earning it.
John Oehser 2:53
A

it. Listen, i i i it it's television goal to quote my friend Brent Martino. It really, it was great stuff because he was willing to both offer commentary and at the same time coach his guys. You hear him at times going, Go, go, go. Um, he called the touchdown. I mean, the minute he got to the line of scrimmage, um uh Carter Bradley, and lined everyone up. He goes, We're gonna run this and this'll be a touchdown. And and by the time Bradley hit his back step and threw the ball to DJ Dallas, he had called it. We said we're going for two, called the play there. I uh John, I've done this an awful long time, uh, and I have I have a hard time remembering A broadcast moment that was as much fun as that one, partially because it was new ground for us in Jacksonville.
Brian Sexton 3:40
Sean McVeigh did it last year in LA. Um, but also because Liam is so good at it. He just has this I don't want to say flippant, but he's ca just got this devil may care attitude like, I'm gonna be myself and that's good stuff. The F C C might not like it, although I didn't know. It did okay. It did okay. Yeah, well there was but I loved it. It was great stuff.
