You kind of missed also what I think would should be one of the headlines today. And I got to throw this out there. You know, we were a couple weeks ago talking about the Jaguars medical staff being honored as one of the best in the league, right? Yeah. Okay. And then last week we were talking about the Jaguars strength and conditioning staff being named one of the best in the National Football League. And then we get news that the equipment staff was named like the AFC equipment staff of the year. Yeah, by new era for their work last year. So that's a sweep. Almost.
They didn't win coach of the year. That's the one thing they didn't get. Well, wait a minute here now. Okay, look. Let's give credit where credit is due. Okay? We're not talking about coaching. We're not talking about player acquisition. We're talking about EVP Tony Buscelli. Yeah, that's true. I mean, look. I mean, all three of those departments fall under his guidance. So, I got to say this. Congratulations, Tony Buscelli. You know, that his leadership allowed three different departments under his guidance to get recognition this year. I think that's outstanding. And kudos to Tony. I texted him and told him, I said, man, congratulations, because that's a great reflection on you. I didn't even know, and we talked about him last week, I didn't even know there were awards for all these groups.
You know what I mean?
Well, it's because we've never won them.
Right. Who knew? I had no idea. It's because we've never won them. So I just thought that that was pretty cool. Here you got the first ever draft pick in the history of the franchise and somebody who has had a great impact on this organization, especially in the last year, not to mention going all the way back to when he was a player. And then under his guidance to see the three different departments get recognized from the peers around the National Football League to the highest level, I thought that that was just outstanding. And so congratulations to all three of the departments, the medical, the strength training, and then also now the equipment room, George and all the crew there. Kyle, they do a great job.
Congratulations. Good stuff. No doubt about that. Really great to see. Certainly today, Jaguars GM James Gladstone and head coach Liam Cohen, two weeks away from the NFL draft, had the annual draft luncheon, the media luncheon, and then about half an hour, those two sat at the podium at the front of the media room. The Jaguars, of course, have 11 draft picks this year, none in the first round, four picks on day two. James Gladstone asked, As usual, is it the best available player he's going after?
It's always going to come with a little nuance. You're going to compare across positions and where there's a clear visual for contributions and a vision from our coaching staff to seeing that player skill set come to life. And you would typically appreciate the fact that that could come to life sooner than later. And all that stuff has to be weighted against each other. So when you've got two like players and one position allows maybe an earlier runway, you'd lean towards that direction. But it's not so black and white.
James Gladstone, of course, set logs as a part of that Rams staff that for like six years straight did not have a first-round pick.
