What are the expectations for Parker Washington’s role on special teams this season?
At this point in time, I know you talked to us about in the offseason program with regards to Parker, knowing the ascending role on offense. What are your expectations in terms of his availability for you on special teams?
You know, that's something we talked about in the spring with Parker. And, you know, he expressed that he wants to return as well. He's a fantastic receiver, but he's an elite returner. And, you know, he's a game changer. He's feared across the league. He's the best returner in the National Football League as far as I'm concerned. And so I'm excited. When he says that, he wants to play, wants to be back there, help the team win. That's the culture Coach Liam has brought in, and he's just as part of it. He wants to win. And how is he going to help us? It's part of being a punt returner.
And if for some reason he is not your punt returner, who is in that mix right now?
We have a handful of guys. Austin Trammell's a very good returner. He's done it over the years for us here and a career of it. Josh Cameron's been working back there. That's another option. So we have other options. Obviously, I'd love to have Park back there, but we've got a few guys that can do it as well.
What do you think about the guys vying for the kick return jobs?
I would say same. We have a bunch of guys that can do it, and I think it just depends on how the roster shapes out. What does that mean for Bajel Tootin? What does that mean for LeQuint? How much are those guys going to play? Josh Cameron is the dynamic returner. I've been super impressed with him back here at training camp and in practice. So we have a bunch of guys that can do it. And so, like I said, I think we just got to kind of see how this thing all plays out with a roster. active, you know, on game days and playing times. We've got to fit the puzzle of how much they're going to play on offense or defense and then what's that look like for us and what's going to be the best for the team. have been probably beating down your door the most this time of year about special teams and maybe some guys you've been impressed with?
I mean, Josh Cameron's obviously a talented player, but he's very, very smart. You know, he's working with the personal protectors. You know, that's a big challenge. You know, some of the other guys, Zach Durfee comes up every single day. Brian Thomas comes up every day.
Who are the other players competing for punt and kick return duties?
And that's a, you know, as an undrafted free agent, that's an emphasis. I tell them, you're a late-round pick, you're undrafted. You're going to do it on special teams. So, you know, the young players, you know, Parker Hughes is another one that comes up every day now. And it's the importance on this team. You know, it starts with the veteran players, you know, the culture they've brought. You know, I will explain to them how important special teams is, but nobody tells them more than those veteran players that have kind of earned a role on special teams for us.
Have you got somebody that built Dewey's role yet that you think will?
Yeah, I think we have a bunch of good safeties. I think that's part of it. You know, Dewey was a great player for us, a leader and a team captain. But the guys we have, you know, Kayla Ransaw has been a fantastic gunner, you know, a different type player. But, you know, I anticipate him being a starting gunner right there with Rayon. And Rayon, as you guys know, between those two guys, I think we have two of the better gunners in the National Football League. The kicker, the punter, the holder you got coming back. Is it hard to imagine an NFL special teams coach feeling more comfortable with those three guys as you obviously are going into the season? I'm very fortunate. There's no question. Those guys are fantastic.
They're the best in the game at their positions. And then throw Parker Washington into that as well. So, you know, the special teams coordinator job is never easy. But I like my position and very, very fortunate to work with that crew.
