How does the Elective Action Order initiative variant work and when should I use it?
I'm Mike Shea, your pal from Sly Flourish, here to talk about all things in tabletop role-playing games. So over on Sly Flourish, last week we had the article What Excites You? This article was to talk about how you can take the thing you are most excited about for your game and use that as the catalyst to help you prep your game. So sometimes we're, you know. Things get in the way, our emotions grab us and go in different directions, all kinds of things. We get very busy and we think like, oh, I don't really feel like doing my prep. Well, when you don't feel like doing your prep, one of the tricks is to think about your game and think about what are you really excited about in the game. Find that thing that you're really excited about in your game and use that as sort of the the focal point of your prep and the motivator to drive you to kind of get everything else together, whether it's a monster, whether it's a cool location, a piece of terrain.
What is the Forgotten God Kickstarter and is it worth backing?
A neat character option somebody got, an element of the story beat that you're excited about. What is it that you're excited about in the next game? What's that idea? And use that idea to kind of help draw you into your prep and and draw your prep out. So that is the article. What excites you? Available on Sly Flourish. All anybody who's subscribed to the SlyFlurish newsletter gets uh articles like this emailed directly to your inbox. And uh patron, hero tier patrons of Slyflur. Get readings and reflections where I'd read the article out loud and then do a bit of a deep dive into how the article came to be and some other thoughts, sort of the director's commentary of the writer's commentary, I guess, on uh each uh on each article.
What insights did the Wargamer interview with Dan Ayoub reveal about D&D’s future?
This week's article is Elective Action Order, an initiative variant that you can add into your toolbox. Election active uh election uh elective action order. uh also sometimes known as Balsara style initiative or popcorn initiative, uh, is a initiative style that has been used in various games. Gumshoe can use it. I think I think Kevin Culp used it for Gumshoe and for Sword of the Serpentine. Uh you can it it's also part of the Fate uh Fate Condensed uses uh elective action order as their initiative style. And I found that it is a really good initiative style. For Daggerheart. I used it for my Daggerheart game, and I think it works really well for Daggerheart. Uh it works really well anytime the monster actions are based on reactions to things that the characters do.
But you can use it even if the monsters get their own turn. So it's kind of a neat uh way to do initiative. Another one that, like, you know, you can take a look at and decide if it's for you. Uh if you like it, then you can add it into your toolbox. If you don't, then you don't need to.
What did the Bob World Builder survey show about player trust and preferences?
So this article's out on SlyFlourish. Uh, as of this recording, when this recording is released. Uh patr uh uh you can of course get this article emailed directly to you by joining the Slyflurish newsletter. Absolutely free to join the Sliflurch newsletter. Link is down in the show notes.
