What is the focus of Day 2 of the Sensory Mini Course for SLPs?
What's up everyone and welcome to Making the Shift for Autistic Kids.
We're an SLP couple from California with four boys. And we're here every week to bring you neuroaffirming tips, tricks, and tools. Are you ready to make the shift? Let's do this! Hello, hello everyone. Welcome. We are here for day two. Yesterday was so much fun. I see that we had asked you in the chat if you were here. So many of you guys were here yesterday. Yesterday was awesome. I see you guys are putting in some of the takeaways you had. I know a lot of you guys resonated with. the behavior iceberg we talked about, you resonated with that checklist, getting to dive deeper into what your kids are really needing. And I saw and if you haven't joined our Facebook group, make sure you do. I saw in our Facebook group that a bunch of you have commented on the homework and it looks like some of you guys were having some really nice aha moments with your kids and really being able to figure out what is at the root cause of their behaviors.
And in exciting news, I just want to say congrats to those of you who have decided to join us in the Inside Out Sensory program. We are so excited. You may have seen our Facebook group. And if you're not in the Facebook group, but you're here today. make I should tell you this because we only posted this in the Facebook group, but we decided to gift some sensory some of our sensory t shirts, which we have a bunch you could choose from. To the first five people who enrolled yesterday. So we just want to say congratulations, reminder to those of you who weren't here or those of you who were here that we opened yesterday enrollment into our sensory program. And we are now going to be going through the next year with a cohort of those of you who are SLPs and want to dive deeper into.
Your sensory for your speech sessions. So it's gonna be awesome. We'll put the link in there in case you want to browse that while we are chatting today. Today, I am insanely excited about and I've been saying this to our team because this stuff that you guys are seeing today has never ever been given away for free by us and our team. It is brand new. We just created this stuff, it's not anything that has been anywhere on the internet before and we're super super excited to be able to get you this information. I think it's gonna be so incredibly helpful for your sessions and it will be very very directly related to exactly what you are doing every single day in your sessions. So I wanted to do A quick recap over some of the things we talked about yesterday.
Okay, so what we talked about yesterday, we shared with you our decoding dysregulation checklist. This is a checklist that I highly, highly recommend you are using if you have kids in your sessions and you're seeing a lot of dysregulation, look at this iceberg, share this with teachers, share this with parents so that you can really get to the cause of why you are seeing this dysregulation. That's gonna help you so, so much. We talked about how so many of our autistic kids, so many neurodivergent kids have sensory differences, and that is oftentimes at that. root of the big challenging behaviors that you are seeing. So We mentioned how there are some ways that you can help when you are seeing these big behaviors and how can you help from a sensory perspective?
And there are a couple ways that we can do that. But the one thing we need to think about is how full is their cup, meaning how much bandwidth do they have for everything that is going on right now at this exact moment? And do we need to pour a little bit out to make room for more? So at the very end of yesterday, we talked about how there are two ways we can do this, which we're gonna get into this top one today. Which is through using sensory strategies in the moment, which is more of the reactive. We have a dysregulated kid now, what can we do? approach. And then we have the proactive approach, which is how can we prevent this from happening as often, right? We can't always prevent everything, but we can prevent a lot.
