Why do many SLPs think sensory strategies are outside their scope?
Hello, hello, neurofirm world. Welcome to the neurofirm show. Today we are talking about something that is very near and dear to my heart. We are busting sensory myths for SLPs. Today we are going to be talking about The most common reasons why SLPs might might not use sensory strategies. And then we're going to talk about why those are false, why they are not true, why every SLP should be using sensory strategies. So if using sensory strategies has felt hard for you, we are probably going to be addressing some of what you have felt is hard in this episode. So Let's go ahead and get started. If you are sitting here wondering, but why are you, Jesse, talking about Sentry? And maybe you are a little bit new to our orbit or maybe
you're you haven't been around for too long, you haven't heard me talk so much about sensory. Then you might be like, why is Jesse an SLP talking about sensory? And I will tell you that I have been studying sensory for many, many years. I've gone through many sensory training programs before eventually creating my own. I have hired and collaborated with OTs for many years. I've written articles for publications on sensory, spoke internationally on sensory. Wrote an article alongside Dr. Winnie Dunn, who is a world-renowned OT and the author of the Sensory Profile Assessment. We wrote an article together. I consulted with her before creating my own sensory course. So this is my entire world because I have seen how impactful sensory strategies are for SLPs and I just want them to be available to more people.
That being said, I recently announced the dates for our upcoming two-day live training for SLPs. This is a sensory certificate course live training. This is my original course, the one I've been teaching for the years, the one that I've taught to SLPs all over the world. And a couple of times a year, we jump on with you, me and my team, and we teach it live. And that's because you could show up. And then two days later, you walk away with your sensory certificate in hand. So if you have been wanting to take sensory training, if that has been on your bucket list. There is no greater time because with a live training, you will not have that tab sitting open on your computer of the course, haunting you at every waking moment when you have a few extra minutes, right?
You just show up live, you get it done, and it's such a great environment, community, group of people. It's all so much fun. In the sensory certificate live training, we spend the entire first day teaching you what you need to know as an SLP about sensory and how you can assess sensory for your own needs as an SLP. And the entire second day is dedicated to therapy. It's how can you integrate this into your therapy program? And this is a step-by-step approach. It is not here try all these things and see what works. It is very step-by-step. It's very systematic. It's a framework that I've designed and have been using in my clinic for years. And we cannot wait for the live training. Today, in fact, is the very last day to save $400 off enrollment.
This is normally a twelve hundred dollar two-day training. If you enroll today right now, the clock is ticking, a few more hours left.
What are the most common myths that stop SLPs from using sensory approaches?
And the price right now is $7.97. So jump on it now. If you haven't yet, we'll put the link below as well so that it is there for you. Okay, so let's talk about some of the biggest myths we hear about SLPs using sensory and how we can start busting those myths. I have this vision in my head, you know. I feel like we need like one of those images to come in. Thus amiss with us. Okay, the first is that SLPs can't use sensory because it's not in their scope. And Gosh, we must have full episodes on this, okay? So I'm not gonna go too too nutso on my soapbox about this because you guys know that I can do that. Okay, but the thing about SLPs using sensory is that I think about it as SLPs doing anything else that's specialized.
I think about it as an SLP doing feeding therapy. Right? If you were an SLP And someone called you and said, Hey, my baby who's six months old is struggling to eat.
