Preschool screenings are something that can sound really fun and then when you actually do them can feel really overwhelming because there are so many steps involved and it can feel like it's a very intense process. But I will say that I've really perfected the process over the years. I'm really excited to share it with you. I hope this will save you some pain and time and energy if this is something that you're either looking to do. in your practice or it's something that you're already doing, but you also see that it is not going as smoothly as you would like it to and you have questions about it. So I'm going to tell you everything right now about how I do preschool screenings, which I am about to head over in about 20 minutes from now and start them at a local preschool.
Okay, so first let's talk about the steps that happen. We're gonna talk about the before, during, and after. Okay, so let's talk about the before. First thing I do
Why should I charge families for preschool screenings?
First of all, I need to say this before I start. You need to charge for them. Okay. You have to charge for them. And I won't tell you what you should charge. You know, charge something that you feel comfortable charging, but charging is going to be better for you. And it is also going to be better for families. Here's why. First of all, better for you because the They're a lot of work and it's a lot of attention and paperwork and Processes that have to go into place to make them happen. You deserve to be compensated for that time. You don't want to grow resentful for doing them. Okay. First of all. Second, they are really helpful for a family because if families come and they don't pay for the screening, they're going to be less likely to follow up.
They're going to be less likely to feel held accountable to that. They're going to be less likely to hear what your results are. And I know this because I've done this in the past, which I actually have always charged for screenings, but I had one preschool I showed up to one year. one year and I was like, Wow, I can't believe thirty people signed up. It was like the entire preschool. That's a lot. Turns out the preschool told families it was free, which it wasn't free and the paperwork did not say it was free. But it was to the point where I was there. I was just starting my business and I was like, you know what, I'm just gonna do these screenings.
How do I set up the pre‑screening interest form and gather parent information?
Guess how many follow-up calls I got? I'm not lying. I got zero follow up calls from that free screening. Okay. It was just something that. the school told the parents they were doing for free. Okay, so never again. Not that it was intentional, but you gotta charge. So that's first. Okay, so the first thing that I do is I send the school a after we've already arranged the date and all that. I send the school a link to our website and it's just a hidden page and it's all the specifics on the screenings just for that school. So it's the day, the time, it's the purpose, it's the why, why would you choose to have your child participated in the screening? And then it links to an interest form. So this is the parent step one, which is just a basic Google form where they're basically committing to the screening, basically saying, yes, we want to go ahead with the screening.
and putting in super, super basic information about their contact information and all of that. Okay. In that form it tells them what the next steps are, which is You will be receiving, after you complete this form, you will be receiving a link to our client portal where you can fill out all of your intake forms.
