So I always like to talk to people in that line of work. And it's even doubly more interesting when they're into the paranormal in a big way. And that man you're seeing right there is I'm talking about Lawrence Lawson, and he is a veteran law enforcement professional with more than 40 years of experience in criminal investigations, training, security and higher education. His interest in the paranormal began in 1980 after witnessing a full bodied apparition while working as a correctional officer in Miami.
He later became a recognized authority on cult and occult-related crime investigations and in 2011 founded the Florida Bureau of Paranormal Investigation. Larry is also the author of this book right here, Haunted Indian River County, and he is the host of Paranormal Stakeout Radio TV, and we're so glad to have him with us today. Larry Lawson, thank you for joining us. Welcome to the Paranormal Podcast. Thanks for having me on, Jim. I'm really grateful to be here. Well, we're grateful to have you. Now, let me ask you this one. In that bio, the sentence that jumped out at me is the one about 1980 in Miami that kind of set you down this road. Can you tell us what happened?
Sure. I just got my start in the law enforcement field. I was just 20 years old, a kid from Ohio. I'd moved to go to college down in Miami and got into my law enforcement career. And I'd been on the job maybe three or four months, maybe six. I don't think it was even six months. And what would happen is when they were short on the floors, the Dade County Jail in Miami, the one that I worked in, I don't even know if it's still there, but it was 10 stories tall. So it was a rather large facility. And the rookies would all be down at what we called Team 1 downstairs. And if they were short on the floors, they would send us up to, you know, make sure we had proper staffing. Well, I got sent up to the fourth floor this one particular night. And like I said, it was brand new. So everything was still really exciting and new to me.
And I was sitting in the control booth. And the control booth, if you can envision it, it's a glass armored type of cupola. And there's a lobby in front of me, an elevator. Then there were three wings that you could see down with the barred gate on it. And at the end of each wing was another barred gate or door. And that led to the catwalk that went around the outside. And we had to constantly, we'd have to go down each, every half hour or so, go down each cell block in the front. And then somebody would have to go around the outside to look in, just as a security measure. Now, the interesting thing about this 4-4 was it was where... The folks that were on suicide watch or had other emotional mental health issues were on. So it was rather an active place as far as the folks that we had there. Well, I'm sitting there at the control booth and I'm staring at the lobby and the center wing right, almost right in front of me. And I see a figure walk past the gate, right to left.
In uniform, appeared to be in uniform, nothing see-through, nothing wispy about it, looked like a person. I immediately thought it was the lieutenant. It had come up to catch us maybe sleeping or whatever, I don't know. Now, the only two ways you could get up to the floor was the elevator that was right in front of me or the stairwell that was attached to the control booth in the back that went right to the catwalk. So I see this figure walk by and I said, guys, LT's on the catwalk. Get out there. And they shut out the back end of the booth. One went right, one went left, and they came all the way around. Came back to the control booth and walked in about the same time and said, Lawson, there's nobody out there.
