The Pomp And Joe Show
We discuss how Danny Rooney continues to grow in Steelers organization
21 Jan 2026
Chapter 1: What is the significance of Danny Rooney's role in the Steelers organization?
All right, a very interesting new topic has spilled over into the hallway, and that's the growing specter of Danny Rooney in this franchise. Art's son. You said it was interesting, Kabali with us to the top of the hour, that Danny, who's been doing bunches of things, was at the news conference, Art's news conference the other day. How well do you know this man? I've talked to a couple people.
Who haven't had great interactions with Danny in the media. Have not? Have not, but you have. Yeah. Tell me about that. Greatest guy in the world. I've never met the man.
Put it this way. When his grandfather passed away, Dan, or Mr., or as I call him, Mr. Rooney, went to the funeral. And who's at the casket greeting everybody?
Chapter 2: How has Danny Rooney's background influenced his position?
Danny Rooney not Art Danny um that just struck me there is like okay this is a little bit different his grandson's up there greeting everybody but I've had I mean I talked to him you know in passing uh at the owners meeting two weeks two years ago I was at the uh team dinner and And I sat with him and his wife. I mean, very smart, very personable guy. I mean, I don't know. Dartmouth guy.
Dartmouth. I mean, he's had every job. As you mentioned, Bob, I mean, he was a receivers coach. He's worked in marketing. He's worked in business strategy. Basically.
Business strategy overseas. He had the Ireland.
But for him to show up at the Art Rooney press conference the other day, that's the first time you really saw that without Ireland involved.
Well, that leads to a question.

Chapter 3: Is Danny Rooney already influential enough to impact the next head coach selection?
That leads to a question for both of you guys because you know the Roonies, Bob. When is the changing of the guard going to occur? But perhaps more importantly... Is Danny already influential in the organization, influential enough to the point where he's going to play a role in who the next coach is?
I don't think so. I think that this is a once-in-a-generation hire, so let's have him involved here so the next time he comes around that he'll know he'll be through the process. That's the way I look at it.
I do too, just the way Art was with Dan.
Yeah.
the ambassador, how he was involved, but still it comes down to what they think at the end. But I do think he is, you know, he's a guy that's moving right up. How old is he, Bob? 30. He's 30, yeah, mid-30s. Mid-30s?
Quarterback, where Shadyside and Dartmouth. When do you think this will happen, Bob, that the changing of the guard will happen?
I don't think it ever will, officially. I think it will be a slowly powered, you know, never, hey, I retire.
Well, they won't.

Chapter 4: What are the potential candidates for the Steelers' head coach?
I don't think you'll see a big press conference about it.
When will he be the guy making the decisions? Well, it's Art now, 70.
He's like 70, 71.
71, 72. Can't be too much longer.
I still think it's a process that he hasn't completed yet. I still think it's part of ā this whole passing of the baton down the road, but it's not yet ready. But I think he's learning a lot. He's gotten a lot of say in some of the other stuff that's gone on. They put him in position of a lot of responsibility. And it's going to take some time.
Yeah, I don't think it's going to be like... He's a really smart guy.
I don't think he's going to hand over the keys to the organization one day and say, here, Danny, I now knight you.
Right, right. It'll happen subtly. Oh, man, look up at that screen right now. Nick Wright saying the Bills should ask Belichick. Can you imagine the... Belichick coming here.

Chapter 5: How does the choice of head coach affect the quarterback situation?
No, Belichick to Buffalo. Can you imagine?
He's actually saying that? He wants that to happen?
Nick Wright is saying, I would ask Belichick to take the job if I were the Bills. The level of vengeance that Belichick would arrive with in that division.
That might entice him.
Would you do that? And then Brandon Bean is going to have to say, wait a minute now. I'm the guy in charge here. I don't know they'd do that. I think the owner there has a lot of respect, and he really wants Brandon Bean to run that show. Which is why they gave him a promotion after all of this and they got rid of the head coach.
I think Belichick would go there in a second, don't you?
Potentially, right? I mean, I don't know how committed he is to Carolina.
It's got to be a package deal. Not very, I would say. He and his girlfriend have got to be in charge. Coach, GM.

Chapter 6: What factors will determine the next Steelers quarterback?
That's how it's got to work.
All right. Back to this. And we need some answers before you leave. Who's going to be the Steelers' next coach and who's the quarterback for the season opener?
Wow. See, one's based on the other, right? That's so hard to say who the quarterback's going to be right now because you don't know who the head coach is going to be. I mean, right now, if there's no head coach, it's just nobody, it's Mason Rudolph in my eyes. But the new coach might not want Mason Rudolph here. There's no guarantee he would. It'd be crazy to get rid of him, but I don't think so.
um i'm leaning towards i'm honestly leaning towards mccarthy right now and who the quarterback would be i don't think it would be rogers man mccarthy would be such such a mammoth departure from the profile of guys they've hired in the past i mean that would be incredible don't we all want change
Depending on what kind. That's different. That's different. It would be different. I'll give you that. It would be way different and totally unexpected if you would have talked, you know, the day Tomlin resigned, what everybody was talking about. Not a single, I don't think, not a single person thought that Mike McCarthy was a realistic candidate.

Chapter 7: How does Mike McCarthy's coaching style fit with the Steelers' needs?
But he did have successful seasons, not to the level maybe that he won in Dallas, but three times 12 wins. He got a lot out of that offense. He's an offensive guy. Dak Prescott was there before him, of course, but still, there's a lot to like from an offensive point of view. Yeah.
Yeah.
And if that's part of their number one priority, if they believe that, then he would be on your list for sure.
You have to believe that. I mean, like I said, this quarterback thing ain't going away. So they're going to, if you're, if you can't get one, you better develop one. And, um, there's probably not a better guy that can develop one than Mike McCarthy. His history said that, right?
He took a guy like Aaron Rodgers, and maybe Aaron Rodgers is always going to be great, but he still took a 26 overall pick and made him into a four-time MVP, so...
Maybe that was going to happen regardless of Mike McCarthy. No, I can't remember specific. Was he there when they drafted Jordan Love? I don't think so. Because Jordan didn't play very much at the start. I think that was LeFleur.

Chapter 8: What does the future hold for Danny Rooney in the Steelers organization?
Was it? I can't remember how many years back that was.
Thank you, big boy. That was quite a treat. All kinds of things. A couple nuggets. A lot of nuggets. Tasty treats. That was incredible, Bob, was it not? Incringulant. Incringulant is right. It was, yeah. So, all right. Good stuff, Mark. Then we have two questions for people at the top of the hour. Anything really related to the coaching search. But Mike McCarthy's here.
Kabaly thinks he's the favorite right now. And level of concern if Andy Weidel leaves this organization. Who's the football guy?
