First up, Cher has been fighting with Sonny Bono's widow, Mary Bono, for four years over royalties from the Sonny and Cher catalogue. Songs like I Got You Babe and The Beat Goes On. The dispute centred on Mary attempting to use copyright termination rights to reclaim 50%, that's the share of royalties Cher was granted, in their 1978 divorce settlement. Well, Cher won. The federal judge ruled in the end of last year that California contract law, which governed the divorce, trumped termination power.
But here's the kicker. She's won. Cher then asked the judge to order Mary to reimburse her over a million dollars in legal fees. The judge declined. So a win and a big old waste of a million bucks.
