Chapter 1: What sparked the joy of Team USA's gold medal win in hockey?

0.537 - 21.97 Unknown

A couple of Sundays ago, I joined millions of people around the world to watch Team USA face off against Team Canada for the gold medal in men's hockey. Not gonna lie, I wanted Team Canada to win, and as you surely have heard by now, they didn't, so rough day for me, but a great day for so many friends of mine. One of them, my pal Katrina, texted our group Sunday night.

You should have seen me weeping tears of joy this morning. I texted back, I wept the other kind. But over the course of the following few days, Katrina had buyer's remorse. The joy faded and was replaced by a different feeling altogether. On Tuesday night, she texted again.

Chapter 2: How did the initial excitement of victory fade for fans?

38.043 - 44.914 Sean Rameswaram

Sean, if it makes you feel any better, basically every single last drop of joy that I received from the men winning the gold has pretty much been eradicated.

Chances are your favorite websites used to depend on Google for traffic and money. But that's not really working anymore. Now publishers are scrambling for new lifelines. Neil Vogel, who runs People Inc., says his company figured it out a couple years ago. You would think, given what everyone said about us, that we would be the guys that would be doing the worst now.

117.508 - 129.516 Peter Kafka

We're kind of the guys doing the best now. I'm Peter Kafka, the host of Channels, the show about tech and media and what happens when they collide. You can hear my conversation with Neil Vogel now, wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts.

Let's start with the hockey of it all. Here's Sean McIndoo. He's a hockey guy at The Athletic.

146.201 - 163.628 Sean McIndoo

The joke in hockey is that there is no, no sports fan has hockey as their second favorite sport. There are the diehards. And then there are the people who don't pay any attention. They don't care. They don't get it. And that has always been a problem for the sport. How do we get more eyes on this product?

164.269 - 185.624 Sean McIndoo

How do we break out of just being a product that is loved by the diehard fans and sort of break into the mainstream, into the pop culture world and what have you? And that's why the Olympics is such a great opportunity because you When the Winter Olympics comes along, everybody's watching. Every sports fan, even people who don't watch sports, get involved in the Olympics.

Chapter 3: What role does the Olympics play in increasing hockey's popularity?

706.359 - 721.618 Sean McIndoo

Now, players who typically don't get asked about politics have to be asked questions. And you had Jack Hughes. Again, this is the guy with the missing teeth who scored the winning goal. And instead of being asked, you know, how did it feel in that great moment of your life? He's being asked that.

And also... How do you feel about the women not going?

0

726.704 - 734.273 Kash Patel

They got busy schedules, too. I mean, we... I know we're getting a lot... Like, everyone's giving us backlash for all the social media stuff.

734.293 - 751.891 Sean McIndoo

Questions like that, a lot of hockey players aren't comfortable with. And whatever answer you give is going to look bad to somebody. And so it just kind of becomes this mess. And again, it's that feeling of... In today's political climate, certainly, we just can't have nice things.

757.698 - 762.905 Unknown

Maybe not, Sean. But maybe check out the PWHL if you're looking for a nice hockey thing.

When we're back on Today Explained, is everything politics now?

781.782 - 802.799 Unknown

Noelle King. Hey. Do me a favor. Give me like three reasons why you make Today Explained. I give you one. One? Wait, if you do one and I do one, that's two and that's compromise, right? All right. I make Today Explained because the world is a very big and confusing place, Sean Rama's firm, and we want to help people understand it. Simple as that. That's a really good reason.

802.96 - 824.635 Unknown

Okay, in addition to that one, to make it two, like I wanted a compromise, I like the idea of there being a news show that feels like the experience of going through the news, that feels like it's made by your fellow human who wants to understand the news and not like it's made by some all-knowing, almighty force. And I like to think that our show is that show. I love that.

825.157 - 851.642 Unknown

What's the best way to support us, Sean? You can support Today Explained by going to vox.com slash members. You get perks, ad-free versions of the show and all Vox podcasts. Who could ask for anything more? Today Explained is back. I am Sean Ramos from, and is it just me or is everything politics now? Here's a list off the top of my head.
