Local search is changing faster than most businesses realize. According to Sterling Sky's research, local pack ads grew from 1 to 22% of track searches. And now AI is adding a whole new layer of disruption. Between AI powered local results, AI mode, expanding ad inventories, and Google's increasing reliance on third party data, local businesses are facing a future where visibility is becoming hard. Harder to predict and harder to measure. How do you adapt when rankings become less reliable? AI systems show different results to different users. Paid placements continue to consume more and more of the search experience. I'm Jordan Cooney, and joining me today is Joy Hawkins, owner and president of Sterling Sky.
Jordan Cooney 1:30
Joy has spent nearly two decades studying local results and has led more than a thousand local SEO tests to determine what ranking factors really matter. Today, we're going to talk about local SEO, how it's evolving in this age of AI, in the rise of paid visibility, and what businesses need to do to stay ahead. Joy, welcome to the Voices of Search podcast.
Joy Hawkins 1:50
Thanks for having me. I'm excited to be here.

Лайз, ампт. Локоаноршо. Um it is something that I think is uh wildly underestimated in this ecosystem, not only for consumers, like what consumers need to know about how local businesses are served and and shown. But just in in like the way that the the systems work, right? It i it is a different it's a different environment. It's a different game of SEO and um I I'm one of those the people that always says like I'm not a local expert. Like I don't know a a ton about this space and how to yield the sword of like success in uh in local for local businesses, but you do. So so Joy, tell us about Sterling Sky. Tell us how you started this company and and and and what you guys do.
Joy Hawkins 2:39
Yeah, uh so Sterling Sky started uh in twenty seventeen. Um it wasn't a planned thing, never really wanted to be an agency owner at all whatsoever. Um I worked at two different agencies for a total of eleven years before I went out on my own. And I only went out on my own because um I don't know how to say this. I'm like an overachiever, so I have really high standards and uh the place that I was working at the time would sell SEO like crazy to businesses and they would have me be the salesperson. So I'm selling based on all this like knowledge and expertise that I had with being an SEO for uh over a decade. And then they would have some like junior person come in and actually work on these accounts who'd been doing SEO for like three months.
Joy Hawkins 3:21
And so there's a big disconnect in the quality of work that the clients were expecting versus getting. And it really bothered me. Like I was not okay with it. So I was like, I'm gonna go just do it on my own. I actually wanted to do SEO. Like I didn't want to be a business owner, I just wanted to do good SEO and I wanted to know more about Google's algorithm than any of my competitors. Because that's like I'm a very driven, motivated person.

What is the current state of local search and how has AI changed it?

Joy Hawkins 3:42
So that's all I wanted to do. I wanted to hire maybe two people. um to do the things that I wasn't good at and um that was it. And then I guess we started getting quite a bit of demand. So then I hired more people and then more demand and then more people. And then we have we're we're getting close to fifty. I think we'll probably hit fifty staff this year. Um, which is crazy 'cause I'm not like a big Like I'm a people person, but I I'm not the type of person that would be like excited about managing fifty people.
