Dan Smullen 1:58
Hi, Sorry, great to be here.
Jordan Cooney 2:00
Yeah, likewise. It's it's exciting to be with a fellow SEO who's got a wide range of experience. You know, I don't have nearly as much agency experience as you do, but this is a really fun topic of talking about this in-house versus agency function and what that really means, what that means to the SEO industry. I want to just start off by getting your perspective on these two functions and roles. or or or options in terms of how you might look at your SEO career.
Dan Smullen 2:29
Yeah. So let's just take the obvious, right? So there is no qualification to be an SEO. Anybody could call themselves an SEO. You could be twenty plus years in experience and only do black hat SEO or whatever and call yourself an SEO or you could be fresh off the books and do like Neil Cattel's course and and you're an SEO, right? So like basically there's no certification. So I would say the best degree masters in SEO is agency. You you get your hands wet in all sorts of different uh encounters, problems and you also get different minds to throw ideas against your when you're in-house you're basically in-house based on whatever the company is. So if you're in-house in say LinkedIn, you're B2B, right? Straight off the bat.
Dan Smullen 3:14
But if you're in-house in say Macy's or something like that, like you're e-commerce, right? So your skill set is is entirely different. Whereas when you're in an agency, you could have a it could be whoever the the agency wins as a client could be your your client and you could have the most boringest client ever or you could have the most exciting client that you're super passionate about. So th I would say that's the the the key difference between the two.
Jordan Cooney 3:37
Yeah, no doubt. And I mean, I think that's the the beauty and the challenge, right, about the agency role is that sometimes you just don't know who you or what you're gonna work on, right? But that's also like the biggest opportunity because you get to see under the hood. you know, excuse the analogy, but you get to see under the hood across all these different organizations how they function, how they operate, how they measure performance, how they think about their businesses. And that gives you a ton of skills as you maybe move up your career and you know progress your career.
