Welcome to the Voices of Search podcast.
I'm your host, Benjamin Shapiro, and joining me today is Matt Rodd, who is the unconventional investor and leading expert in digital investments at eBusiness Institute in Australia. EBusiness Institute helps people build wealth through digital assets. And Matt has a very unique approach to SEO and also investing. And today, Matt and I are going to talk about why SEO is actually like real estate. All right, here's the first part of my conversation with Matt Radd, the lead expert in digital investments at eBusiness Institute of Australia. Matt, welcome to the Voices of Search podcast. Great to be on here, Ben. Thanks for having me. Excited to have you on the show. Excited to reconnect. Uh, you know, this is a little bit of a different episode than we normally record.
Yeah. We're normally very tactical about how to optimize for SEO, how we're using artificial intelligence to, you know, do a better job making sure that our sites are visible and and valuable. And you're an expert in actually helping SEOs and and other people that are in digital the digital digital world monetize their work. So you've got an interesting philosophy that SEO is like real estate. Tell tell me all about it. Yeah, yeah.
Digital assets are like real estate. And what's really interesting is we get asked to speak at conferences because uh when I say we, my wife and I have made our money through buying and selling businesses. And in 2008, we started to buy and sell online businesses. And then we got asked to speak at conferences, like typically real estate conferences and SEO conferences, because that's how we grew these sites through SEO. And what we know. Noticed was when we speak to experienced SEOers, we'd be telling them about clients of ours who are total beginners making more money than they do as SEOers. And they're going, How are they doing this? And it's through buying these online businesses. And basically, some if you're listening to this and you're an SEO, maybe you haven't considered.
I know SEO is very addictive. It's a lot of fun to do, but we say to if you've got SEO skills, why the heck wouldn't you? Buy your own rundown website and fix it up over a period of time as a bit of a side hustle with your SEO skills. And in a nutshell, that's why it's like real estate. We look for, you know, the rundown websites that are neglected, like buying the worst house in the best street. And you find them in good niches and we fix them up just like fixer upper. And you can flip them. Flipping's a big thing now, but it is actually very similar to the real estate strategy.
What is the core analogy Matt Raad uses to compare SEO with real‑estate investing?
is just buy, fix up and hold for the cash flow or or flip.
You know, it sounds uh easy when you say it like that. You just buy it, you fix 'em and you sell 'em. Well great, no problem. And I you know, I'm not the world's biggest real estate expert. Be honest, I'm not the world's biggest SEO expert, but don't tell anyone. But I know a little bit about both. And I'll talk about my real estate experience. I you know, my wife and I built a house and we've lived here and we got a thirty year mortgage. We're planning on being here forever, raising our kids and you know, until we can afford a place at the beach, staying here for a long time. But most people are are in their house and they buy it and they live in it. So is there a way when you're talking about SEO being like real estate to buy and live in your house?
