What is the main excuse people give for not walking and why does it matter?
Today we're going to talk about five mindset shifts to overcome the number one excuse not to exercise, not to take the walk. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation, encouragement to get out and take the walk. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes, the ST6. These are minimal shoes, wide toe box. All the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion.
They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes. All right, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out. Try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, topoathletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm going to be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out.

How does Dave define the number‑one reason people skip exercise?
From time to time, there is new research or a new poll or survey with answers to this question, what is the number one reason that keeps you from exercising, that keeps you from taking a walk? And usually there are three to five answers that are pretty well predictable. Weather. I don't like the weather. I'm too tired. I don't feel like it. It's boring. But almost all the time, the number one answer is this. I don't have the time. I'm too busy. My schedule is too crazy. There's too much going on. I simply don't have the time. I want to give you five mindset shifts that will help you deal with that excuse if you ever feel it, if that's something that you've said to yourself about taking the walk. I don't have the time today.
I just don't have the time. Five mindset shifts that will help you deal with the number one reason, the number one excuse for not exercising, for not taking the walk. Mind set shift number one. Think small. Oftentimes, because it's just out there in popular culture, we think we need to walk 10,000 steps a day. I've done plenty of episodes, YouTube videos about the myth of 10,000 steps. You don't need to walk 10,000 steps a day. If you do, that's great, but you don't need to. There is plenty of research indicating that a 10-minute walk delivers plenty of benefits, a lot of benefits. Not all the benefits, but it's not inconsequential. Mindset shift number one, don't think 10,000 steps, don't think 30 minutes a day, think 10 minutes a day.
That's the goal, a 10 minute walk every day. Most of us, even with the busiest of schedules, even on a day where we are traveling all over the place and it looks like there's no time, most of us can find 10 minutes to take a walk. So mind shift number one, think small.
Why should you think small and aim for a 10‑minute walk instead of 10,000 steps?
Not big. Mind shift number two, which follows number one, schedule the walk. Put it on your schedule. The best way to do this is find a consistent time every day where you can walk. It's like, you know what, I'm looking at my schedule and I think I can do this every day at 6.30 in the morning. That is rarely intruded upon by all the stuff I have to do. And if you can't find a consistent time at the beginning of the day or maybe even the night before, as you're considering all that you have to do, pick a 10 minute block. It's like, OK, today I can do it at three in the afternoon. Write it down, put it in your phone, schedule the walk, because if you leave it open ended, especially when you're thinking small,
The temptation is, oh, I'll find 10 minutes somewhere along the day. And you get to the end of the day and then you remember that you forgot.
