What is the purpose of today’s “Walking Plus” episode and who is hosting it?

Dave Paul 0:02
Today we're going to talk about walking plus. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation, maybe even encouragement to get out the door, take the walk, and more importantly, to keep going to build that life-changing, life-lasting walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes, the ST6. These are minimal shoes, wide toe box. All the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need.
Dave Paul 0:49
Minimal shoes, maximal cushion. They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes. All right, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box.

How do the new Topo Athletic ST6 shoes feel and why does the wide toe box matter?

Dave Paul 1:01
And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out. Try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, topoathletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm going to be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out.

Why does Dave say every walk is “walking plus something else” and how can you use that mindset?

Dave Paul 1:40
Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, topoathletic.com. So one of the great benefits of walking as exercise is that we can almost always do something else while we're walking. Even if we're not doing anything else, we still are doing something else. Our mind is free to wander, to think, to process, to dream, to plan. You can do that even if you're walking inside on a treadmill and the scenery's not changing. Or if you're outside, you're walking solo, you're not listening to anything, you're not using it as an opportunity to learn, to expand your horizons, you're not processing, planning, dreaming, you're just noticing. You're noticing the surroundings. Every walk is always going to be walking plus something else.
Dave Paul 2:43
But there are times when we can get intentional about that walking plus and serve others, help others as we're walking. got a comment recently on the walkingness fitness youtube channel from a viewer who mentioned that they have taken up i think as something they do consistently walking and picking up trash So they have a plastic bag. They say I've got a plastic bag. I'm wearing plastic gloves. And while I'm out walking, looking for the trash, picking it up, putting it in the bag, and then at some point disposing of the bag. And I think that is a great idea.

What is the trash‑picking walk idea and how can it serve the community?

Dave Paul 3:25
In fact, I did an episode where I was doing that very thing. I was walking with... gloves on, and a plastic bag, and I was describing the trash that I was picking up. And I thought, this is an amazing episode. People are gonna love this. I actually got some comments from people that weren't being nasty or unkind, just letting me know that wasn't my favorite episode, listening to you pick up trash. And then I realized that for some people, Where they walk is a bit of a grind. You know, a comment that I hear a lot on the YouTube channel is, boy, I'd walk more if I had a place like that, wherever it is I filmed the video, if I had a place like that to walk. And so for some, listening to the podcast actually allows them to feel like they're walking someplace other than where they are, as I'm describing where I'm walking.
Dave Paul 4:30
Like today, I'm walking on a dirt trail. To my right is a huge field with a line of trees at the edge of the field. And then there's a grove of trees in the middle. To my left, maybe a dozen feet away, is another line of trees. And so this feels secluded.

How does describing the trail and wildlife enhance listeners’ walking experience?

Dave Paul 4:56
It doesn't feel like I'm walking in the woods, but I certainly feel like I'm walking in nature. Well, because I am. And it's possible that I could see wildlife. In fact, as I was saying, I just saw a red cardinal go from one branch to the other.
