What is the walking hack that’s hiding in plain sight?

Dave Paul 0:03
Did you know you have a walking hack hiding in plain sight? Hi, I'm Dave, welcome to Walking to his Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation to get out the door, take the walk, and more importantly, to keep going. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic.

How does Dave’s new Topo Athletic shoes improve his walking experience?

Dave Paul 0:28
These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion. They've got road shoes, trail shoes. Recovery shoes, race shoes. Alright, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness.

Why does the building alarm sound matter before the habit discussion?

Dave Paul 1:15
You can check them out. Again, TopoAthletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com. Alright, first I'm going to address the obvious. Can you hear that what sounds like a siren? It is a building alarm. Someone has not yet taken care of it, but I am moving further away from the alarm.

What makes creating a walking habit so hard, and why is it still worth it?

Dave Paul 2:00
Actually it could be a vehicle alarm, which could be on the other side of the building. But that sound is going to fade or someone will will turn it off. But I just wanted to address that before we jump into it. Creating a walking habit is a hard thing to do. Deciding that you want to is actually very easy. Benefits of walking are tremendous. And thinking that okay. I'm gonna do this. Maybe you saw the walking is fitness YouTube video and You've been listening to the podcast and you've been thinking Not a bad idea. Wanna do this?

How can making peanut‑butter toast become a walking habit starter?

Dave Paul 2:41
But getting started is proving to be a speed bump too high. Did you know that there is a walking hack that is hiding in plain sight? Yes. If you enjoy toast for breakfast as much as I do. You've got a hidden but wonderful opportunity to create a walking habit every morning. So I've been enjoying peanut butter toast as part of my breakfast for decades. I love peanut butter toast. It might even be my favorite food. Now the delivery system, the the bread part of the toast has changed over the years. And now the bread that I use for my toast is very healthy. Uh the peanut butter is organic peanut butter, no additives, just basically ground-up peanuts. I prefer chunky peanut butter to creamy. So my toast, my peanut butter toast, uh, in theory, is actually a healthy way to start my day.
Dave Paul 3:57
And we have a toaster oven, one of those not the toaster that I grew up with, which was four slices, you put the bread in and push the thing down, wait for it to pop up. And the toaster oven doubles not only as a toaster, but as an air fryer, a small oven. you know the whole whole thing. There are basically three types of toast personality. There's the the bread that is barely crispy. It's warm. Doesn't take a whole lot of time to get that toast. There's the person who likes their toast brown. And then there's the person who likes their toast almost burnt.

What is habit‑stacking and how does it work with your morning toast routine?

Dave Paul 4:42
Ava is in the third category. I'm kind of in the first category. Warm, barely crispy, I don't even need brown on my bread. And if it if I've made a mistake and I end up in the almost burnt category, I just I just throw that away and start over. That's that's how I roll. So if you enjoy toast as much as I do, Depending on your toast personality. You've got a hidden opportunity to create a walking habit every single morning. While you're bred, if you're willing to Walk around the kitchen, could be around the dining room table.
