What is the purpose of the 30‑Day Walking Challenge and how does it work?

Dave Paul 0:02
A glimpse of the future. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking Is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation to get out the door, take the walk, and more importantly, to keep going, to build a life-changing walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion.

They've got road shoes, trail shoes. Recovery shoes, race shoes. All right, let's open The box, and there's a box inside the box, and these are nice looking and very light, very light. Let's pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness.

How do the new Topo Athletic ST6 shoes improve my walking experience?

Dave Paul 1:14
You can check 'em out again, topoathletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com. Got some light rain on day two of the 30-day walking challenge. Actually, when I left the house, checked the forecast, because it had been raining earlier, and the forecast indicated I was good. Not gonna get wet. But I've seen this movie before. So I grabbed the umbrella before I headed out, tucked it in my back pocket, and within five minutes the

Rain started falling. Very light rain. You can I can barely even hear it on the umbrella. But I'm walking beside a lake and I can see the raindrops hitting the lake, and it looks more dramatic on the lake than it sounds on the umbrella. I'm going to keep the umbrella open for just a bit. Evanessen says, had cervical spine surgery last year, and a big part

Why does a wide toe box and zero‑drop matter for daily walkers?

Dave Paul 2:34
Of recovery was going for a daily walk, sometimes twice a day. Even helped with residual muscle pain. Got away from it, but now that the weather is nicer, I am reincorporating a walk into my daily routine. It can be so lovely in the morning. Surgery recovery required this level of commitment, so I am accepting the 30-day challenge. Day two. Got an email, it's been a couple of weeks now, from Fatima, who lives in Nairobi, Kenya. And this is what Fatima writes. I've been following your podcast on Spotify since late March of this year, and I've been hooked ever since I found it. I started with your first episode, and I'm currently walking alongside Dave from March of 2022. So, quick side note, at some point if Fatima continues to listen, she will hear this Easter egg in the future, this hidden surprise.
Dave Paul 3:37
Fatima, hi. So glad you're listening. Alright, back to Fatima's email. You have motivated me to walk continuously. I started with a 30-day challenge and am currently on day 52 of my 60-day challenge. I can't imagine going a day without walking for three reasons. And here are Fatima's three reasons.

How did the light rain affect Dave’s day‑two walk and what tips does he share?

Dave Paul 3:59
Number one, it's the time of day I look forward to as I get to focus on myself and get fit. Fatima's second reason, I get to listen to my favorite podcast, Walking as Fitness, as well as audiobooks while I'm walking. And then Fatima's third reason, I do not want to break my continuous walking streak. So Fatima started with a 30-day challenge, a self-imposed challenge. Could do this every day for 30 days. Reached the end of 30, crossed the finish line, I assume celebrated, and then decided to keep going. And is now, as she wrote this, she was on day fifty-two of a sixty-day challenge. For the first 30 days, I walked 45 dedicated minutes, aimed for 8,000 steps throughout the day. And for my 60-day challenge, I try to walk 50 minutes and aim for at least 9,000 steps daily.
