What problem with walking consistency does Dave introduce at the start of the episode?

If you struggle with consistency, I've got a hack that I think will make it a little bit easier for you. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with added motivation to get out the door, take the walk, and to keep going. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I'm pretty close to actually pulling the umbrella out of my back pocket. Got some light rain, but if it heavies up any more than it is, and it is expected to do that, that umbrella is coming out of my back pocket and the rest of the walk will be with the sound of rain hitting the umbrella. So before I get to the hack that I believe could make consistency easier for you, I want to tell you a secret.

Yesterday I filmed a new video for the Walking is Fitness YouTube channel. The topic of the video is benefits of walking in cold weather, including you can burn more calories when you're out walking in cold weather. So if losing weight is one of the motivations for walking, getting out, walking while it's cold, while the temperatures are uncomfortable, is helpful. And I explain all that in the video. Obviously people watching the video on YouTube can't feel the temperature, but I want them to feel the temperature emotionally So how I portray that visually is pretty important Yesterday was a cloudy day. So I thought it was a good day to to do the video because for me clouds in the winter just feel colder than blue sky and sunshine We live in Myrtle Beach so filming

on the beach at the ocean probably is not the best way to communicate cold we got a lot of palm trees in the community palm trees don't exactly shout it's cold here we don't have snow and ice on the ground so I don't have that so I had to figure out a way to communicate this feeling of cold while I was filming the video so we had the cloudy skies and here comes the umbrella So we had the cloudy sky. You hear the echo? My voice is bouncing off the umbrella. It's also pretty windy. So I had the cloudy skies, but I also wanted to find trees that have bare branches. Because bare branched trees and cloudy skies, I think, go a long way to communicating it is cold. So I found a stretch of road near our home with a...

line of trees that had lost their leaves. In fact, I start the video with a couple of these trees behind me. I held the camera a little bit lower so it was looking up so there was more of the gray sky and these trees as I was walking along without leaves. I've got a coat on. the collar is up i've got my ski cap on so the feeling is very much it's cold and there are benefits to walking in cold weather now i never say what the temperature is while i'm filming this video and here's the secret i don't say because it was 65 degrees
I'll be posting the video on YouTube in probably a week or two. The rain has lightened up just a bit.

I feel like the umbrella was only making it sound windier. So I want to talk about a hack that can make consistency a little bit easier. Consistency is one of those things that can be a real challenge. Even if you have a habit, I think consistency can be a subset of that habit. For example, I have a habit of lifting weights, strength training. I've had this habit longer than walking as a fitness activity. Yet I struggle with consistency doing it as often as I want to, as I should. And one of the reasons is because I haven't used this hack on my strength training. One of the reasons that folks are doing my year of getting stronger is they want to build consistency into their walking routine. They want to get more consistent, tired of the kind of scattershot approach.
Dave Paul 5:04
So there's this desire to become more consistent. And becoming more consistent in your fitness activities is certainly a way of getting stronger. So they're going to be using my year of getting stronger to build consistency into their walking. But right now I want to talk about a hack that I've come to realize is super important in making something consistent. Rock solid consistent. Have you ever heard of decision fatigue?
