Why do people feel discouraged about exercise and fitness?

Dave Paul 0:03
If you've ever felt discouraged about exercise, I'm going to tell you why that is. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation to get out the door, take the walk, and build a life-changing walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes, the ST6. These are minimal shoes, wide toe box. All the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need.
Dave Paul 0:47
Minimal shoes, maximal cushion.

What new shoes is Dave unboxing and why mention Topo Athletic?

Dave Paul 0:49
They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes. All right, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out. Try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, topoathletic.com.

How does shoe fit (wide toe box, zero drop) affect walking comfort?

Dave Paul 1:19
You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm going to be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out. Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, topoathletic.com. I'm going to make an assumption, which I don't think is too far off base. Because you are listening to this podcast, Walking is Fitness, perhaps even as you're walking, I'm going to make the assumption that you have attempted exercise, creating a consistent, regular exercise routine. Maybe this is the first time you've attempted it. Or, if you're like me, this is not the first time, but it is one of several times and previous attempts have ended
Dave Paul 2:27
Well, just ended.

What common pattern causes exercise routines to fail after a few weeks?

Dave Paul 2:30
I want to say ended badly, but that might not be the case. Might be that you just gradually, slowly, almost imperceptibly stop doing the thing, which really isn't ending badly, it's simply ending. Put another way, bluntly, most of us have a history of fitness fails. exercise attempts that don't last. It's what we do. It's what we do. And typically, when we get started, we've just got a lot of emotion. We're excited. Transformation is going to happen. We've got a goal, perhaps. And we're highly motivated. And we begin thinking, well, this time is going to be different. This time it's going to last. This time I'm not giving up like I have in the past. And then, inevitably, we hit weeks two, three, and beyond, and we've lost the motivation, we're not as excited, and we actually are happy when something comes up on the calendar, on the schedule, and we don't have to go to the gym, or we don't have to take the run, or we don't have to take the walk.
Dave Paul 3:54
It's like, oh good, there's a reason why I can't do it today. So I was listening to a podcast recently, and the host and the guest were talking about exercise, and they both have robust exercise routines that have lasted for years, and I think for both of them, maybe even decades. And they were talking about recording their workouts. And what I mean by that is not video recording or audio recording, but in some sort of notebook, spreadsheet, they're actually writing down what they did. keeping track of their exercise routines.

Why do people need a record of progress to stay motivated?

Dave Paul 4:44
And then the guest said something that literally, because I was walking as I was listening to this podcast, the guest said something that caused me to literally stop walking, to pull out my phone and write down what he said. And here's what he said. I can tell you behaviorally why people do that. That is recording their workouts. I mean, what you want is record of progress. Because that's one of the great secrets to human happiness. You never arrive. Arrival gives you almost nothing. But it's progress toward the goal. Wow. And as soon as he said that, I was like, absolutely. I mean, I've talked about the importance of progress in this fitness journey.
