Welcome to Walking as Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with added motivation and encouragement to get out, take the walk, and more importantly to keep going, to build a life-changing walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this.
I left the house a few minutes ago, oblivious to the weather, other than I knew it was hot and sticky. and that at some point today it'll probably get cloudy and maybe more. But as I was leaving the house the sky looked somewhat blue. And it still does if I'm facing that direction. But now that I'm walking and facing this direction I see ominous dark grey clouds. Guess that's to the northwest. And we are in a weather pattern here in South Carolina, Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, that has the threat of thunderstorms most days. I think I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be able to get this walk in before rain starts falling, if we even get rain. Mm-hmm. So many times it looks like we're in for a dramatic thunderstorm.
And I'll even pull it up on the radar and it's like there it is. And it scoots by, misses us by a few miles. Which is at times disappointing. It's like I'm ready for a I'm ready for a show. Old Roscoe left this comment on the Walking as Fitness YouTube channel. My walking today was with the weed trimmer, then behind the lawnmower. I'd say a good hour at least, a bit more than my normal walks with the dog. We might walk later, the day isn't over, but first a nap. Ha. There's so much about this I love, especially the nap part. But that's not the point of of this episode. It's how old Roscoe is looking at opportunities for walking. And those are the daily chores that we do. And this is a perspective that has changed for me over the years.
And I'll get to the perspective shift in just a moment. But I thought it would be fun to list chores that you and I can do that involve walking, getting steps. Certainly yard work tops the list. Old Roscoe mentions the weed trimmer and the lawnmower. And I cut the grass yesterday, used both of those, the weed trimmer and the lawnmower. I've got a much smaller yard now. Used to be when I got my first step tracker, we lived on a half acre. And I used to push mower. Powered, but still a push mower. And I could reasonably get about 6,000 steps cutting the grass. It was like wahoo, it's grass day. We have a much smaller lot now. And maybe a thousand steps, couple thousand steps. And it's not about the steps anymore, it's about let's get the grass cut so the neighbors don't get upset.
So there's cutting the grass, there's raking, walking around with the blower when we lived our house in Maryland with the larger yard. would walk around and pick up sticks. Actually individually. Pick up one stick. Walk it to the back, there was a wooded area, drop the stick, come back, find another stick, walk back, and you can tell what my goal was there.
