What is the 30‑day walking challenge and how does it start?
Alright, let's go. Day one of the 30-day walking challenge starts now. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking Is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with added encouragement to get out the door, take the walk, and more importantly, to keep going, to build a life-changing walking habit. Today's 10 minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion.
They've got road shoes, trail shoes. Recovery shoes, race shoes. All right, let's open the Box and there's a box inside the box, and these are nice looking and very light, very light. Let's pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, TopoAthletic.com. You can do your shopping online.
Why does Dave recommend minimal shoes with a wide toe box?
You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in. And yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm going to be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com. Alright, here we are. Monday, June first. Day one of the 30-day walking challenge. Regia is in. Regia says, thanks, Dave. I shouldn't procrastinate because on the days I walk, I feel so much more energetic. Maybe this will get me in the habit of walking. This, of course, is the 30-day walking challenge. Three components, really simple. Number one: take a daily 10-minute walk, make a commitment, a promise to yourself.
That you're gonna do this every day for the month of June, starting today, 10 minutes every day. Number two, listen to this podcast, Walking is Fitness, because every day there's gonna be a brand new episode. I'm Out Walking, I'm doing the challenge right with you. A daily 10-minute walk. And then number three, track your progress, celebrate your wins using the 30-day fitness chain tracker. Free, there's a link in the show notes.
What are the three simple components to keep the walking habit?
Printed out 30 shoe prints that are kind of connected together. You can hang it on your refrigerator, and then when you finish your walk, you color in a shoe print as that chain grows, as you take these daily walks on those days when motivation's a little more of a struggle. You look at the 30-day fitness chain tracker, you see all those shoes. Colored in, and you are reminded of what you're doing. You're doing a hard thing, and you don't want to break the chain, so you go out and you take the walk. So, three simple components, and Rugia is saying, I'm in. Because when I take a walk, I feel so much better. And the issue of procrastination is what is keeping Rugia from doing that. This. And here's the thing procrastination is real.
This podcast. I waited four years from the day I got the idea to do a daily 10 minute podcast to encourage you to walk. It took me four years to go from, hey, that's a really good idea, to, well, here it is, first episode. Think about it. I try not to because it's discouraging. Four years of missed opportunity. Missed opportunity to encourage you. to motivate you to get out and take the walk. Because I procrastinated, I was waiting for the perfect time, I was waiting for the perfect opportunity. I think that's one of the beautiful things about this 30 day challenge. It's ten minutes. For most of us, doesn't feel like a hill too high.
How can you overcome procrastination and schedule your daily walk?
That doesn't feel like a distance too far. That doesn't feel like a time commitment that's too overwhelming. Most of us can find the time and find the energy for a daily 10-minute walk. And it usually is procrastination that keeps us from doing it. So let me offer a couple of suggestions. If you're still on the fence, or maybe you've already made the commitment, you're in, you've got the 30-day fitness chain tracker printed out, a couple of suggestions.
