What is the host’s opening message and purpose of today’s episode?
Today, heat wisdom from a grizzled veteran. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking Is Fitness, a daily ten minute podcast designed to provide you with encouragement, motivation, to get out, take the walk, and more importantly, to build a life-changing, life-lasting walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need: minimal shoes, maximal cushion.
They've got road shoes, trail shoes. Recovery shoes, race shoes. Alright, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, TopoAthletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com.

I'm guessing this is a first initial and last name R. Raquello. left this comment to a YouTube video. I had a job that entailed a lot of walking and when it got hot, you still had to do it. There was no getting out of it just because of the temperature. In other words, I was a mailman. People actually used to stop me and ask how I could stand it, especially when I got older. I worked in one hundred plus degree weather. When I was in my late fifties and early sixties, so I wasn't young. And it was a foot route, no Jeep. And then our Rocquello gives six things, six pieces of advice, wisdom from a grizzled veteran. on how to stay cool or cool ish actually It might not even be how to stay cool. It's simply how to get out and walk when it's hot.
Number one, wear a hat. Number two, Araquella says, so first thing is wear a hat. And number two is and dark glasses. Araquella mentions those are not options. The worst of the heat gets in through your eyes. Number three, wear loose clothing. This is kind of standard standard advice. And I will add that the color of the clothing really does matter. So loose fitting, light colored clothing can actually have a pretty big impact on how you feel. I have shirts that are cotton shirts. In fact I'm wearing one one right now. It is a muggy morning here in Myrtle Beach and I do feel hotter than if I were wearing one of my performance sweat wicking shirts. So that makes a difference. Also the color can actually have more of a significant impact than you realize.
It certainly has more of a significant impact than I realized. I don't actually I don't know if I mentioned this on a a video or an audio podcast, but Ave and I, this few weeks ago, we were getting ready to take our post-dinner walk and it was hot, it was muggy, and she was wearing a black tank top, walked out of the house to the end of the driveway and said, Nope, turned around, went back inside, and came out wearing something that was almost white. And she said, It feels so much better. Number four, our Raquello says, drink a lot of water. A Rocquello says, that's pretty obvious. I did some work on our house in Maryland, this was maybe fifteen years ago, laid a patio with my son. And it was in the middle of July.
And this was before I had a hydration habit. My hydration essentially was I'll drink a soda when I get thirsty. That was the wrong move because the next day I felt completely wiped out.
