What is the purpose of the 30‑Day Walking Challenge and today’s walk?

Dave Paul 0:03
We're gonna talk about five common walking mistakes. From an expert. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking as Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation, encouragement even, to get out, take the walk, and more importantly, to keep going. To build a life-lasting, life-changing walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion.

They've got road shoes, trail shoes. recovery shoes, race shoes. Alright, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, TopoAthletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you.

Why does Dave highlight the wide toe box and zero‑drop shoes from Topo Athletic?

Dave Paul 1:27
All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com.

Alright, before I really get into today's walk. Can you hear the bugs? I'm assuming those are cicadas, locusts, that sort of thing. and they kind of come in waves. I love the sound of summer cicadas. Takes me back to my childhood. At times it can get really loud. This is somewhat quiet actually compared to how loud it can get. It is day twenty of the thirty day walking challenge, sixty-six percent of the way done, two thirds finished. I think emotionally we're starting to come out of the messy middle. The finish line, the accomplishment zone is now getting closer and closer, and that starts providing motivation to get out and take the walk. Got an email this morning from Jeff. Good morning, Dave. It's been a while, but know that I still listen to the podcast every morning before I do anything.
Dave Paul 3:43
Yeah. Today was day four hundred and twenty-five of intentional walks. I only missed one the day after a COVID booster that left me unable to do much besides lay around. We just got back from a European trip and cruise, and I set a goal to walk eleven thousand steps every day. I took my athletic running shoes and then he describes what those shoes are like. Deep cushion that feel amazing and are wonderful on hard surfaces. Jeff says, I love walking in these shoes. I only ever have worn these for walks, not for all day footwear. However and he capitalizes the entire word However. By the fourth day my left knee started to hurt and by the fifth day It was excruciating traveling down the outside of my lower leg.
Dave Paul 4:40
I remembered your interview with doctor Connolly about Zero Drop wide toe box shoes. We were in Kirkwall, Orkney that day, and my wife found a shoe store that sells these types of shoes. Shelling out an exorbitant amount, I bought a pair of Zero Scrambler Trail shoes. Within two days. The leg pain was gone. And I could feel my feet toughening up. Price wasn't exorbitant after all. So thank you for that wisdom. It's actually not my thank you, Jeff.
