Would getting paid to walk increase your motivation to exercise?

Dave Paul 0:03
Would getting paid to walk provide more motivation for you? Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation, encouragement even, to get out the door, take the walk, and keep going. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes, the ST6. These are minimal shoes, wide toe box. All the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need. Minimal shoes, maximal cushion.

They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes. All right, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out. Try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, topoathletic.com.

What makes Topo Athletic shoes suitable for walking and foot strengthening?

Dave Paul 1:17
You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm going to be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out. The days are longer, the calendar is filling up, and I want to feel as good as this beautiful summer weather. That's why I've been loving Groons. It's one daily pack of gummies that covers my greens, vitamins, and minerals, and even has six grams of prebiotic fiber. So I don't need to juggle a complicated wellness routine on top of everything else. They taste amazing. They're easy to toss in my bag on the go. Plus they're vegan, gluten-free and HSA FSA eligible for reimbursement. Save up to 52% off with promo code podcast at grooms.co that's code podcast at G R U N S dot C O.

I have a friend who has, I think struggled would probably be an accurate descriptor. He has struggled to walk, not physically, he's more than capable of walking, but the motivation, the emotional attachment to walking. I have long said that once you get started, most people find this fun. Not everybody does, but most people do. My friend is one of the exceptions. He has Started walking, actually been doing it for a few years now. Tries to walk two, three miles every day. But at least as he describes it, he's not having fun. It's still very much a have to, not a get to. I have to take my walk, not I can't wait. I get to do this. Well, my friend has a part-time job three days a week. We live in Myrtle beach.
Dave Paul 3:40
He lives maybe a half mile away.

How does Dave describe his first impressions of the new ST6 Topo shoes?

Dave Paul 3:44
And he got a job with a rental car company at the airport. And we live maybe 10 minutes from the airport. And three days a week, his job is to drive the rental cars after they're dropped off at the airport to the place where they clean them up, check them out, gas them up if they need, get them ready for the next renter. And then he, after he drops the car off at that area, he takes a car that's been finished, drives it back to the rental parking lot. So he's driving all day long, but he's also walking all day long. And it is not a rarity for my friend to get 10, 12, 14, 16,000 steps while he's working. We had dinner recently, a group of us, and he was talking about the walking and he said, they're paying me to walk.
Dave Paul 4:58
I love that. He is motivated to walk on those days when he's getting paid and he's picking up 15,000 steps a day, which you don't get when you're walking two or three miles a day. So it got me thinking. It got me thinking about jobs where you get paid to walk. And for some, this might be most of the walking that you do while you're on the clock, while you're getting paid. And I'm going to take two of them, the two obvious ones, at least to me. Mail carrier, and I know a lot of mail carriers now sit in the vehicle, the Jeep, and drive from mailbox to mailbox.
