What is the main purpose of today’s 10‑minute walking episode?

Dave Paul 0:03
So what causes a long time walking habit to go sideways? Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking Is Fitness, a daily ten minute podcast designed to provide you With a little added motivation to get out the door, take the walk, and more importantly To keep going, to build a life changing walking habit. Today's 10 minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the topo athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion.
Dave Paul 0:50
They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes. Alright, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out.

How do the new Topo Athletic shoes feel and why are they important for walking?

Dave Paul 1:08
Try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check 'em out. Again, topoathletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com. Day five of the 30-day walking challenge. Patty's doing it. She says my reason for doing the 30-day walking challenge is to maintain mobility and improve bone health. As a sixty-eight year old woman that prefers sedentary activities like reading, knitting, crocheting, and binge watching TCM, I think that's Turner Classic Movies.
Dave Paul 2:11
Binge watching T CM, the battle is real to get me out the door. I've walked for many years, and But consistency has always been a struggle for me. I'm on day five, walking and tracking on my phone. Thanks for all the encouragement. People like me need it. This is Patty in Cahuta, Georgia. I'm not sure if I'm saying that right. I'd never heard of Cohata, Georgia. Looked it up. It's near the Tennessee border. And it looks like Patty, depending on where she lives, in Cohata, she could walk from Georgia into Tennessee. She's also not far away from North Carolina and Alabama. So four states right there within either a walk or a short drive. But Patty, the battle is real. When we are sitting and doing things we enjoy, getting up and moving, that's hard.
Dave Paul 3:11
Glad you're doing the challenge. And hope this works really well for you. Dawn says, I'm participating in the 30-day challenge. I've been slacking for a few months after years of regular walking as well as listening to the podcast. This slacking is due to moving and semi-retiring, which got me out of my previous routine. I'll be walking in the morning on the golf side trail in Treasure Island, Florida. Let's get walking. And then this comment was left in the YouTube channel. Actually has nothing to do with the 30-day challenge, but there's there's something important that I want to focus on in this comment. So this viewer writes, I'm 66, love your videos. After about 40 years of regular exercise, I've become bored.
Dave Paul 4:04
I hope your encouragement will get me back on. How is it that a forty year commitment to exercise? And we'll even focus on walking. How does a forty year commitment to walking go go sideways? Well It's in this b boredom. Now Dawn. mentioned that she had a regular routine, but then she got off track because that routine was broken. She moved, semi-retired, so the way she had been doing things, the routine that went by the wayside. And when the routine gets broken, the habit can go sideways. But that's not what is happening in this viewer's comment. It's not so much the routine getting broken. It's I've been doing this for 40 years and candidly I've become bored. So five Five thoughts. Five thoughts about boredom about long time habits, long time routines that have lost their edge.
