What is intentionality and why does Dave love this word?

Dave Paul 0:02
Intentionality is one of my favorite words and I want to talk about it today and share a comment with you from someone who I think is exhibiting great intentionality when it comes to fitness and to walking. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast that provides you with a little added motivation to get out and take the walk and perhaps even more importantly, to do it consistently. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. One of the things that Ava and I have been amazed at, surprised, but not in a good way, is how many cars here in Myrtle Beach end up in water. And I'm not talking the ocean. I'm talking lakes, ponds. It's crazy. We'll see something on the news, maybe once a week.

Why do cars keep ending up in lakes and ponds during walks in Myrtle Beach?

Dave Paul 1:05
And I mention that because I'm getting ready to walk past one of the lakes near where we live. And I think it was last year. A car left the roadway, and you can hear some cars that are coming. So a car headed in the direction these cars are going right now, left the roadway, which is probably a dozen feet from me. And I've got a pretty wide sidewalk, maybe 10 feet. Left the roadway over top of the curb. across the grass, between trees, there are trees maybe every 10 feet, trees and poles, navigated through that, and then down this embankment, which is just to my left, and into this pond, which is pretty big, and I'm standing right about where the car, oh, there's a little bird there, right about where the car, I think it was like a minivan, went into the water, no one was hurt.
Dave Paul 2:01
went into the water and you couldn't even see the vehicle. So this pond obviously is deep enough that a vehicle could be fully submerged. And so there was a tow truck pulling that vehicle out of this pond. We're surprised. It's like, what is going on here? Why can't drivers stay on the road? Why do they keep ending up in lakes and ponds and

What did Linda say about walking 20,000 steps and how does it relate to intentional walking?

Dave Paul 2:33
It's one of the reasons when I'm walking, even in an area that feels like it should be safe, and this does feel like it should be safe where I'm walking. I'm still aware. Have to be. Have to be aware at all times. I want to share a comment from Linda in the Walkiness Fitness YouTube channel. This was to one of the first videos I put up on the channel. I think it was video number four. Five things I learned walking 20,000 steps every day for two years. So here's what Linda said. 20,000 steps is a hard thing unless you are quite deliberate. And I'm gonna take a little editorial license here and swap out the word deliberate for intentional. Same kind of thing, but I love the word intentional, intentionality.

How does intentionality differ from motivation and excitement for daily walking?

Dave Paul 3:36
20,000 steps is a hard thing unless you are quite intentional. I pull it off only once or twice a month, but that depends on having the trifecta of events. Number one, taking my grandson to school. We ride bikes and walk. Number two, walking his dog, part border collie, so pretty energetic, walking his dog around the farm field surrounding their property. And number three, taking my grandson to his weekly one-hour art class during which I circle the parking lot dozens of times. Of course, that's in addition to my intentional, she uses the word intentional here, that's in addition to my intentional daily walks of two and a half to three and a half miles each day in my neighborhood. That combination easily gets me over the 20,000 step mark.
Dave Paul 4:33
But my usual days are 10 to 15,000 steps and that's plenty for me. And I agree, Linda. No one needs to walk 20,000 steps. And that was not the reason why I pursued that goal for two years. It wasn't a health need. It was simply I wanted to do a hard thing coupled with I was starting this blog and 10,000 steps didn't feel big enough 20,000 steps I knew would get people's attention so I made the commitment 20,000 steps every day for a year and posted about it daily along with a picture and some thoughts and the previous day's step count but that's not the focus of today's episode the focus of this episode is the intentionality that is necessary for fitness So there are a couple of things going on here.
