What is the episode’s main focus on walking and health?
Today on the podcast, I'm going to combine two topics that I've never combined before in more than 1700 episodes. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking This Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation to get out the door, take the walk, and more importantly, to keep going, to build a life-changing walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe.
With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion. They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes. All right, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out. Try them on.
How do the new Topo Athletic shoes feel and why does the wide toe box matter?
Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check 'em out. Again, TopoAthletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com. We're just four days away from the thirty day walking challenge. It starts Monday, June first. It'll span the entire month of June. Терті дайс за чален. Very simple, number one, make a commitment to walk 10 minutes every day, not 10,000 steps, but simply 10 minutes every day.
Most of us, on even the busiest days of our lives, can find 10 minutes for a walk. And on those days when we don't have as much energy as we would like, when we're feeling a little sluggish, we usually have enough for a ten minute walk. So that's number one, a commitment to walk ten minutes every day.
What is the 30‑day walking challenge and how can listeners join?
Number two Listen to this podcast Walking is Fitness every day in June for added Encouragement plus to keep it fun. I'm going to be sharing 30 fun facts about walking, some of which I'd never heard before. So there'll be one each day during the month of June. And then number three, download the 30-day fitness chain tracker. It's 30 footprints linked together, and every day you keep the commitment and take the walk. Color in a shoe print. And I know it sounds cheesy, but it works, especially on those days when motivation is a little lacking. You don't want to break the chain. And so you get out, you take the ten minute walk, by the way. If you're a longtime listener to this podcast and you have downloaded the 30-day fitness chain tracker and you're thinking I'll just print that out again, brand new, totally redesigned, lovely 30-day fitness chain tracker.
There's a link in the show notes for that. And before I get started combining hearing with walking, I just want to let you know I'm walking on a brand new Yeah. So uh they started working on this uh a couple weeks ago. I even mentioned it. They're almost done. Uh it's crushed gravel right now and it's this nice path along the lake, the stream.
What recent research links hearing loss to walking speed?
It connects to the wooded trail and probably within the next I don't know, few days, few weeks, they will put asphalt down over top of this crushed gravel and that will complete this walking loop around two lakes that are behind our community. And I think if you do the entire loop plus the new trailhead that's at the other end, I think we can get a three-mile walk-in. I know it's at least two. might even be three miles total. So we're pretty excited about that. So I saw something in the Wall Street Journal about research that connects hearing loss And walking speed. So it's a joint study research project. From Apple. and the University of Michigan. It's got a pretty large sample size, fifty seven thousand iPhone users.
