What question is Dave answering about walking as exercise?
Today I'm going to attempt to answer a provocative and even somewhat critical question. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation to get out the door and take the walk. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes, the ST6. These are minimal shoes, wide toe box. All the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need. Minimal shoes, maximal cushion. They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes.
All right, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking.
How do the new Topo Athletic ST6 shoes feel and why does the wide toe box matter?
And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out. Try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, topoathletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. walking in and yeah this wide toe box makes a huge difference so i'm going to be wearing these and i'll give you an update shortly in the meantime check them out topo athletic t-o-p-o topoathletic.com
The days are longer, the calendar is filling up, and I want to feel as good as this beautiful summer weather. That's why I've been loving Groons. It's one daily pack of gummies that covers my greens, vitamins, and minerals, and even has six grams of prebiotic fiber. So I don't need to juggle a complicated wellness routine on top of everything else.
Why does Dave recommend the Topo Athletic brand and where can listeners buy the shoes?
They taste amazing. They're easy to toss in my bag on the go. Plus they're vegan, gluten-free and HSA FSA eligible for reimbursement. Save up to 52% off with promo code podcast at grooms.co that's code podcast at G R U N S dot C O.
One of the things I've really come to appreciate about YouTube and the Walkingness Fitness channel on YouTube is the comment section and the ability to interact with viewers in a way that I don't have with these daily podcasts. And there have been a number of viewers who have been watching most if not all of the videos and commenting on most if not all of the videos and those comments are encouraging and inspiring and helpful. But there have also been, of course, critical comments. It just comes with the territory. But there's been one guy who has consistently left comments to the videos, whether they're the long videos or the short videos, that have been critical of walking as exercise. Now I don't answer every comment, but I do answer a lot of them, and I have responded to this guy.
Thanked him for watching the videos, thanked him for his opinion. But there was a comment recently that he left that I went a little further than simply thank you. And this was to one of the YouTube shorts that, less than 60 seconds, the title and the topic, Who Decided 10,000 Steps? And his comment was, the more important question is, when did walking become considered exercise? And so I responded to that comment with this. Well, what do you recommend instead?
What are the benefits of Groons gummies and how do they fit into a simple wellness routine?
And more importantly, how do you motivate others to do this? So he responded. It was a rather lengthy response, and I'll share with you the highlights of that in just a moment. But I want to answer his question. When did walking become considered exercise? Now I'm aware that there are experts, medical professionals, of which I am not, licensed personal trainers, of which I am not, who land on both sides of this question. Because of the algorithms, I tend to see those more often that land on walking as exercise more than I see the other, but I know that the others exist. But I also have embraced those experts who say if you're consistently intentionally walking at a moderate pace for a certain length of time, about 150 minutes a week, that walking has risen to the level of exercise.
