What is the “two‑edged sword” of feeling like it’s not enough?

Dave Paul 0:02
The two edged sword of it's not enough. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking Is Fitness, a daily ten minute podcast designed to provide you with encouragement. And motivation. To get out, take the walk, and more importantly, to keep going to build a life-changing walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion.
Dave Paul 0:50
They've got road shoes, trail shoes. recovery shoes, race shoes. Alright, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light.

How does Dave’s new Topo Athletic shoes influence his walking routine?

Dave Paul 1:05
Let's pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, TopoAthletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in. And yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm going to be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com.

Recently I was hunkered down in my brown leather chair for the evening. It's a part of the day that I really look forward to. Talk a lot about walking, obviously. That's what the podcast is about, the benefits of walking, the benefits of movement. and the dangers of sitting. And there was a season of my life where sitting was not comfortable, sitting for longer periods of time Not comfortable, not something I enjoy doing. Well That season has shifted a bit. And at the end of the day, I enjoy sitting in my brown leather chair, reading, listening to music, watching a game, streaming something on my iPad. And so I had Hunker down. The day of movement was over and now it had transitioned into an evening of sitting.

And I glanced at my step tracker. And thought it's not enough. This thought, this feeling, it's not enough. I believe has probably caused so many people to stop. maybe even to give up. Because it's this insidious feeling, this insidious attitude of no matter how much I do, it's not enough. So why bother? Give you an example. I have been gradually, this is a years long transition, gradually transitioning my nutrition from something that was really not healthy. to something that over time has become much healthier. And I'm proud of that. And I've learned how to read nutrition labels. and prioritize certain things in my nutrition and to eliminate certain other things. I'm not perfect, as you'll see in just a moment.
Dave Paul 4:58
Anyhow, Eve and I were having a conversation and this is something that she's been focused on as well. And I was telling her about how I've prioritized this one particular aspect of nutrition and I'm really, really making headway, really proud of of how far I've come. And then she asked a question about another aspect of nutrition that I don't think about at all. That's important. And like, I don't know. I don't know how much of that I get. I have no idea. And we had this conversation and I had this feeling in the midst of the conversation and this is certainly not where she was going with it, but this is the insidious nature of that feeling that attitude of it's not enough.
