What is the main message of today’s episode?
The takeaway for today's episode, I'm not going to bury the headline. The takeaway is simply just start. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with added motivation and encouragement to take the walk and even more importantly, keep going to build a life-changing walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes, the ST6. These are minimal shoes, wide toe box. All the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop.
How does Dave describe the new Topo Athletic ST6 shoes and why does he love the wide toe box?
This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion. They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes. All right, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out. Try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, topoathletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch, walking in.
And yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm going to be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out.
Why does Dave recommend the daily 10‑minute walking habit for motivation?

The days are longer, the calendar is filling up, and I want to feel as good as this beautiful summer weather. That's why I've been loving Groons. It's one daily pack of gummies that covers my greens, vitamins, and minerals, and even has six grams of prebiotic fiber. So I don't need to juggle a complicated wellness routine on top of everything else. They taste amazing. They're easy to toss in my bag on the go. Plus they're vegan, gluten-free and HSA FSA eligible for reimbursement. Save up to 52% off with promo code podcast at grooms.co that's code podcast at G R U N S dot C O.
The headline for this episode, as I mentioned a moment ago, just start. So recently I had a morning that because of several events, circumstances, I started the day with zero motivation to really do much of anything. Those circumstances, it had been a late night, so I woke up and got started later than I'm used to. And I'm very much, my wife likes to say, I'm very much a creature of habit. The way I frame it is routine is important to me. Quite a bit of my routine is time-based. And my routine removes a lot of the decision making for each day. If I had a day with absolutely nothing on my schedule and no routine, I know that on one hand, that kind of sounds dreamy. It's like, oh, that would be awesome.
And there's a part of me that like, yep, that that would be. But that would also be a day that would be a little bit harder because I've got to figure it all out. So when am I going to take the walk? When am I going to do this? What about that? What am I going to do? And there are times when having to figure all that out for me is demotivating.
What happened on the “not‑great” morning that left Dave with zero motivation?
And it was on this particular morning. So I got up later. My routine was altered because the times were altered. And I had to figure out what I was going to do. And to get real specific, the things that I had to figure out weren't eating breakfast or drinking coffee. I'm highly motivated to drink the coffee. That is not a problem. But I had an episode of this podcast that I was going to record. I was going to film a video for YouTube, the YouTube channel. I was going to take a walk. I started the day with almost no motivation to do any of that. And the reality is, I actually didn't have to do any of that. I had an extra episode of the podcast that had been recorded a couple days earlier. I could have used that.
I didn't need to go and record an episode. I didn't need to film a video for YouTube. I didn't need to take a walk at that particular time. I got a big truck that's coming up behind me.
