What is the purpose of the 30‑day walking challenge and today’s celebration?

Dave Paul 0:03
It is day 30 of the 30-day walking challenge. Finish line? Not so much. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation and encouragement to get out the door and take the 10-minute walk. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes, wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic. Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion.
Dave Paul 0:48
They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes. All right, let's open. The box and there's a box inside the box and these are nice looking and very light, very light. Let's pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, TopoAthletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. Alright, leaving the back porch.

Why does Dave recommend the new Topo Athletic shoes and what are their key features?

Dave Paul 1:27
Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com. Well, here we are, day thirty of the thirty day walking challenge. Some might look at this as the finish line. I don't. To me, it's the celebration line. Because this challenge really isn't about these thirty days. It's about creating a lifelong walking habit that will change your life. And so there will be a day 31 and a day 79 and a day 2642. No, I don't have a fitness chain tracker that that goes that big. Today we're going to celebrate some of those who have done the 30 day challenge and hear what their biggest win has been.
Dave Paul 2:23
But we're not just going to do it today. I'm going to be sharing stories all week. So would you tell me your biggest win if you did the 30-day walking challenge? My email is Dave at walking as fitness.com. You don't need to remember that. I've got that listed in the show notes for this episode. So just copy that and paste it into an email. Melinda says the 30-day challenge has helped me stay consistent during an especially busy month. I did miss one day. We live in Utah where it seems everything is ablaze and the air quality one day was just too bad. Usually if I walk in the morning it's not too bad, but one morning was pretty horrible. Melinda says, Thank you for helping keep me consistent. Melinda, thank you.
Dave Paul 3:14
You've done the hard work. You're the one who's built this consistency. Joe says, my biggest win doing this 30 day walking challenge has been keeping a record of my walks and actually walking more than 10 minutes at a time. I knew I walked a lot, but I had no record of it. This little sheet, that's the 30-day fitness chain tracker, this little sheet held me accountable. Thank you. Wajita, hi Dave. My biggest win is being able to start again when I miss a day. In the past, if I missed a day, I would feel so ashamed. Even seeing the gaps in my tracker would have felt like failure. But now I understand it's part of the process. What matters is to keep making. Progress. The episode where one of the listeners said she reframed her thinking from focusing on how many days she missed to how many days she went for a walk that stayed with me.
Dave Paul 4:14
I was surprised when it was raining heavily and I had zero resistance towards going for a walk. I went out and was even in a good mood despite my shoes getting soaked. Now I know that whatever happens, I've proved to myself that I can get back into walking. In the past, any hint of being uncomfortable, whether it's the weather or I simply don't feel like it, would have led to missing a walk. No more. Wajita, congratulations. Sarah in Texas. Hi Dave. I've enjoyed following along and doing the walking challenge, the 30-day walking challenge this month.
