How does Dave introduce the purpose of today’s 10‑minute walk?
This feels like something I should improve, and so I'm going to use walking, am using walking, as a way to get better at this. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation to get out the door and take the walk. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes, the ST6. These are minimal shoes, wide toe box. All the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion.
They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes.
Why does Dave choose Topo Athletic’s ST6 shoes for this walk?
All right, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out. Try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, topoathletic.com. You can do your shopping online.
What does Dave notice about the wide toe box and zero‑drop design?
You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch, walking in. And yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm going to be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out. Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, topoathletic.com. Okay, this is not actually a good thing, or that's kind of an awkward way of putting it. This is actually not a good thing. How's that better? I'm on the way to the store, walking to the store to get some bananas, and I'm taking a different route. It's one of the great things about living where we live. There are so many different ways to walk, different ways to get places. And so I'm kind of doing an off the beaten path route to the store to get bananas, which is about a mile away.
And I didn't realize that part of the route has no sidewalk. And there's a little bit of traffic here. As you can surmise, it goes past. And I stepped off of the road onto the grass. And I'm walking head on to traffic. So when traffic... Oh, there's a sidewalk. Okay. I may be 20 yards, 30 yards from a sidewalk. Anyhow. I'm heading into traffic, so when a car is coming my way, like one is right now, I can step out of the road, off into the grass, let the car pass safely, and off we go. All right, maybe 15 yards away from the sidewalk.
How does taking an off‑beat route to the store affect his focus?
Anyhow, I'm not going to give you a play-by-play of every vehicle that's turning and heading in my direction. So, something that I've noticed about myself that I don't think is a good thing, and I think most people would say it's not a good thing, And I believe there's a way that I can use walking to... Sorry, slightly distracted by the loud car. Here's the thing. It sounded loud, but if you were to see it, it would not match what you probably thought it looked like. I think there's a way to use walking to improve this aspect of my life, and that is my shrinking attention span. I know culturally we're all kind of about how our attention span has shrunk and we blame it on any number of things, not the least of which is technology.
I don't know if that's entirely it, but certainly for me it's a factor. and five what I'll call data points that prove to myself that my attention span is shrinking. Number one, speaking of technology, how often I pick up my phone when I get even a slight bit bored. You know that quote that I've talked about before in some of these episodes from Blaise Pascal that All of humanity's troubles come from our inability to sit in a quiet room alone. I love that quote, and I've actually tried learning to sit quietly in a room alone. It's a process, because I'm not there. And when I start getting bored, I pick up the phone, start scrolling. So to me, that's data point number one, that my attention span is not what it used to be.
Number two, I love reading and I used to have the ability to sit for long periods of time reading a book.
