What is the purpose of today’s ten‑minute walk and shoe unboxing?

Dave Paul 0:03
Today I want to attempt to reverse engineer a bad habit. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking Is Fitness, a daily ten minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation to get out the door and take the walk. Today's ten minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion. They've got road shoes, trail shoes.

Recovery shoes, race shoes. Alright, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, TopoAthletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com.

The days are longer, the calendar is filling up, and I want to feel as good as this beautiful summer weather. That's why I've been loving Groons. It's one daily pack of gummies that covers my greens, vitamins, and minerals, and even has six grams of prebiotic fiber. So I don't need to juggle a complicated wellness routine on top of everything else. They taste amazing. They're easy to toss in my Bag on the go plus their vegan gluten-free and hsa fsa eligible for reimbursement. Save up to 52% off with promo code podcast at groons.co. That's code podcast at gruns.co.

I don't know if you can hear the rain hitting the umbrella. It is a drippy day here in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I'm walking along a wooded trail, so not only am I hearing the rain that's falling, I'm also hearing the rain that's falling off the leaves as I walk underneath these trees. Alright, so I want to share with you a comment that I recently received, and then it's going to lead to a little bit of reverse engineering. Alright. So here's the comment. Don't know the person's name who left this to one of the Walking as Fitness YouTube videos. This person is 69 and he says, I recently just did my first 10-minute walk. It was I didn't realize how I have let myself go since retirement. Just filled out my first step in the 90-day fitness chain tracker.
Dave Paul 3:30
So first off I want to applaud this guy for taking the first step, for doing something that really, really is hard. To get started, that is so hard. And he did. And I'm hopeful that he continues to get up and keep moving, day after day, week after week, month after month. But here's what I want to reverse engineer. So let me reread this comment. Sixty-nine years old. I didn't realize how I've let myself go since retirement. I'm sure there's a lot to unpack in the I've let myself go, but I wanna focus on one aspect which I think is a safe assumption and that is he's become sedentary. He has stopped moving and his lifestyle involves a lot of sitting. So I want to reverse engineer how this happens and specifically how this can happen in retirement.
Dave Paul 4:36
And I'm gonna be making some assumptions here, and this is not specifically directed at this particular individual, how he let himself go, but these are some thoughts about how this can happen to anyone, especially someone who's gone from working to not working, to being retired. Number one, when we retire, We no longer have a regular routine.

How do the new Topo Athletic ST6 shoes feel and why are they important for walking?

Dave Paul 5:04
or regular schedule. It's actually one of the challenging aspect of retirement. You know, we were used to having this routine that gave our days structure. And we didn't have to think about it.
