What are the “speed bumps” that keep people from walking regularly?

Dave Paul 0:02
Today we're going to talk about speed bumps, the speed bumps of walking, of getting out and taking the walk. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with encouragement and a little motivation, added motivation to get out, take the walk, and more importantly, to build a life-changing walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe.
Dave Paul 0:48
With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need: minimal shoes, maximal cushion. They've got road shoes, trail shoes. recovery shoes, race shoes. Alright, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out. Try them on.

How does the new Topo Athletic ST6 shoe feel and why does the wide toe box matter?

Dave Paul 1:11
Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, TopoAthletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. Alright, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com. Today is day four of the 30-day walking challenge. Diane is doing this. Diane says I'm walking to clear grief from my brain. My husband passed away two and a half years ago, and while I'm doing better, it's still heavy.
Dave Paul 2:05
I'm hoping that by doing this and creating a healthy habit through walking and listening to this podcast. I can start a trend towards a better mindset and healing. Diane, so sorry for your loss, and I'm hoping this 30 day challenge is helpful, perhaps even more than you expect. Georgia is doing the 30 day challenge. Georgia says, I'm a breast cancer survivor who ended up with several lasting side effects from treatments. I hope that walking will be able to help some or even all of them.

Who are the community members sharing personal reasons for joining the 30‑day challenge?

Dave Paul 2:41
In Georgia, we hope so too. Harper Ann, good morning Mr. Dave. Thanks for the inspiration for this 30 day walking challenge. I actually saw the YouTube video the night before we were ready to start. Maybe it wasn't by chance. I'm a full-time caregiver for my spouse, and I'm finding it hard to get even one minute to myself. But I'm taking the courage to do this for me. And Harper Ann says she is walking in the beautiful state of Tennessee. Harper Ann concludes by saying thanks for the encouragement. So, not too long ago, I asked members of the walking friends community on Patreon, what is your biggest speed bump for walking? And even more specifically, what was the biggest speed bump that you had to overcome to create a regular walking habit?
Dave Paul 3:41
And there were nine options. It was a multiple-choice pole, nine options. These two options. Were tied for last place. Each got three percent of the vote. Safety concerns. And it wasn't specific about what those safety concerns were, but getting out and taking the walk, there was a concern for safety, and that was really a big speed bump to overcome. And another three percent said skepticism that walking could actually help.

What did the Walking Friends poll reveal as the top three walking obstacles?

Dave Paul 4:14
You know, we hear a lot about the research. I talk about it quite frequently. How a consistent habit of walking can lower the risk of an early death, lower the risk of all those nasty things that could lead to an early death. There was actually skepticism that and again, each situation, each circumstance is going to be different. You know, what is it that walking is specifically helping for these folks? But there was skepticism. Ah, is it really gonna work? Is this really worth my time? The next three options, three answers, uh were tied with six percent of the vote. No place to walk. And I hear this a lot with comments to the walkingness fitness YouTube videos.
