What is the purpose of today’s 10‑minute walking episode and who is hosting it?

Dave Paul 0:02
Today, some real life stories of impact. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation, encouragement even to get out the door, take the walk, and more importantly, to keep going, to build a life-changing walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need: minimal shoes, maximal cushion.

They've got road shoes, trail shoes. Recovery shoes, race shoes. Alright, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, TopoAthletic.com. You can do your shopping online.

How do the new Topo Athletic ST6 shoes feel and why does the wide toe box matter?

You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. Alright, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com. Tracy from Central Pennsylvania writes, I so appreciate having found your 30-day walking challenge video the day before it started. I've always been a fan of walking. Used to walk with my mom on a one and a quarter mile loop around our neighborhood that was in Indiana when I was growing up. Mom used to train for walking many marathons. She celebrated her 80th birthday this spring and Still walks with a walking partner in her neighborhood.

I used to enjoy running, but my knees and ankles started complaining after a while and I had to stop. Now I walk. I'm thrilled to have found your podcast and heard about the book titled Walk. That's the one by Dr. Courtney Connolly and Dr. Melissa McDowell. Tracy continues on, I'm working my way through it now and it's fabulous. So affirming for walking as a life fitness. and well-being activity. I'm proud to say I made it. I walked every day in June, usually for a half hour or more. Inspired by some of your episodes, I now love checking my cadence and heart rate. I don't think I've ever been this consistent with my walking. I've really enjoyed doing it during the thirty day walking challenge, and I'm excited to continue.

One of the things that gets me out the door is that walking is just so easy. It doesn't seem tiresome or tedious or difficult like other types of exercise. And when you say my goal is ten minutes, it's super easy to get out the door. And Tracy says she almost always walks for more than ten minutes because, as she puts it, I just enjoy it. Another thing that helps me is that I've discovered I really enjoy listening to your podcast and other audio media while I walk. One of the facts you mentioned during the 30-day walking challenge was how walking pairs well with learning languages. As a lifelong learner of Spanish, I now enjoy listening to Spanish podcasts, interviews, etc., after I finish your 10-minute episode, and it's great.

There are also a few other favorite listens that I enjoy combining with my walks. I could see continuing these daily walks in depth. Definitely. Thank you for inspiring me to a health habit that works so well for me. Tracy, thank you. Appreciate you. Appreciate this encouraging update. This email from Ken, who's also known as Friend in the Walking Friends community on Patreon. Ken says, My daily walking habit has helped me weather the storm of radiation therapy treating my prostate cancer. Last summer, after my PSA, jumped first up to over nine point seven I was told not to ride a bike, my preferred method of exercise until I healed up sufficiently.
