Why does weather feel like a speed bump to starting a walk?

Dave Paul 0:03
Weather can be one of the biggest speed bumps to getting out and taking the walk, but there's a benefit in walking in what we would call bad weather. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with motivation and encouragement to get out, take the walk, and even more importantly, to keep going, to build a life-lasting, life-changing walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes, the ST6. These are minimal shoes, wide toe box. All the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe.
Dave Paul 0:53
With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need. Minimal shoes, maximal cushion. They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes. All right, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box and these are nice looking and very light, very light. Let's pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness.

How can a wide toe‑box shoe improve your bad‑weather walk?

Dave Paul 1:26
You can check them out. Again, topoathletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm going to be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out. Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, topoathletic.com. Marsha writes, I had a yellow lab for 12 years and she got me, forced me, into a walking habit. One of our most memorable walks was in the freezing winter with 50 mile an hour winds. We drove to a nearby lake and the wind had made a gorgeous ice formation, in fact formations, at the edge of the lake. Waves were crashing on the boat dock.
Dave Paul 2:22
My dog's ears were flying up and making me laugh. The resistance of the wind made me walk harder and invigorated me like nothing else. I've never forgotten that day from years ago. Thanks for your encouragement. My knees have arthritis and I can't do long distances anymore, but even less than a mile is enough to see something beautiful and refresh one's mind.

What memory‑making benefits come from walking in freezing wind?

Dave Paul 2:48
Marcia, thank you. Thanks for painting a dramatic picture of that walk one freezing winter day years ago. Weather can be one of the biggest speed bumps to getting out and taking the walk. There's something about opening the door, heading out in weather that is uncomfortable. But there's also an incredible benefit in walking in what we would call bad weather. Now, I understand there are those who believe there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad gear. In other words, if you have the right kind of clothing, the right kind of gear, you can head out in anything and stay safe and somewhat comfortable. But for the context of this conversation, we'll call it bad weather. The weather that is not inviting you to head out might even be keeping you from going out and taking a walk.
Dave Paul 3:44
I think most of us would prefer weather that is comfortable. For example, as I'm walking right now, it is a warm summer morning here in Myrtle Beach. It is going to quickly transition into a hot summer day. But at the moment, I'm walking in shade. There's a slight breeze. The sun is up. It is actually very pleasant. But I also recognize this. I will completely forget this walk in a week or two.

How does torrential rain create a more memorable walking experience?

Dave Paul 4:18
The point I'm making, at least for me, and I don't think I'm alone, that when there's nothing unusual about the walk, when the weather is comfortable and normal, it becomes a very unmemorable walk. One of the biggest benefits of walking in weather that we would call bad is that it creates a memory, perhaps even a lifelong memory. Again, Marsha, it was freezing in the middle of winter, 50 mile an hour winds. That's the kind of weather that would cause most of us to say, nope, not gonna take the walk. And yet Marsha got to experience the sight of beautiful ice formation.
