What are the main goals of the 30‑Day Walking Challenge and today’s walk?

Dave Paul 0:03
Today I want to talk about five real benefits of walking in the heat. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation to get out the door, take the walk, and even more importantly, to keep going, to build a life-changing walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes, the ST6. These are minimal shoes, wide toe box. All the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need.

Minimal shoes, maximal cushion. They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes. All right, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box and these are nice looking and very light, very light. Let's pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, topoathletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm going to be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly.

In the meantime, check them out. Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, topoathletic.com. Welcome to day 19 of the 30-day walking challenge.

Why does Dave recommend Topo Athletic minimal shoes for hot‑weather walks?

One more thing, one more thing about the little snafu in the 30-day fitness chain tracker. Got this email from Renee. I don't mind the imperfections on the tracker. To tell the truth, I didn't even notice. What's really important is all the walks you've inspired over the past three and a half years, walking my way back to a healthier self. And I love coloring in my steps. Thank you. It's from Renee in Georgia. Renee, thank you. Appreciate your encouragement. By the way, if you're wondering, what are you talking about? Snafus and the fitness chain tracker? Well, I talked about it yesterday. If you missed that episode, check that out. And if you have noticed... The snafus? And you'd like a corrected version?
Dave Paul 2:43
Well, not really available. I talked about why yesterday, but there is a revised version, and there's a link for that in the show notes of today's episode. So it is entirely possible, probably even likely, if you are in the northern hemisphere, that your walks outside are getting hotter and hotter. If you're in the southern hemisphere, they're probably getting colder and colder. And if you would like to hear walks that match your experience, check out episodes recorded in December and January because it was cold here in Myrtle Beach. But that is not the experience at the moment. Let me pull up my app. Let's see right now. It's 82, feels like 89. I'm walking early enough in the morning and at the moment I'm in shade, which is good.
Dave Paul 3:35
Later this afternoon, it is expected to reach 91 here in Myrtle Beach with a heat index of 104 last week. We had a string of three or four days where both the temperature and the humidity were really cranked up. In fact, one day I was out cutting the grass, spreading mulch, sweating like a pig, and I finished and I was curious How hot is it exactly? Pull up the app. I don't remember the temperature, but I do remember the heat index, 114, yikes. So today I wanna talk about some benefits, real benefits to walking in the heat. And of course, before I get to that, walking in really hot weather is dangerous and for some could lead to some really serious issues. And this episode is not about toughen up, get out, walk in the heat, no.
Dave Paul 4:36
It's not about that. It's more about you're already walking in the heat. Maybe you don't like it. I'm going to reframe the perspective just a bit and give you some real benefits to doing what you're already doing. That said, it's important to take these precautions. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
