Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe.

In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com. Today I'm gonna try to thread the needle between being vulnerable and honest and not giving too much information.

How do the new Topo Athletic shoes and their wide toe box affect the walking experience?

Dave Paul 2:04
TMI. To Set the context. For as long as I can remember, I have been gut sensitive. And what I mean by that is not that I have a sensitive gut, but But that I'm sensitive to my God. how it feels. Now as I'm getting older and smarter and wiser, the emphasis is much more on the health part of that than simply how it feels. But how my gut feels and what I mean by that is from the time I eat food until it is fully processed and out of my body, How all of that feels is really important to me. And I've been sensitive to how my gut feels, the whole thing, for as long as I can remember. Ava, I don't think, is nearly as sensitive to how things feel as I am. A and maybe she is, but how she handles that is differently.
Dave Paul 3:12
She's She's actually much stronger. For example, she did a twenty-four hour endurance race and about ten, ten hours into the race, she had an upset stomach. She had to stop. She actually Threw up. And then within a few minutes she was out back running again. I'm like, how do you do that? That is so foreign to the way I react and act according to how my gut feels that I just couldn't then and still can't now fully understand the mindset that allows someone to do that. So I've long been sensitive to how my gut feels. And now as I am aging and my gut is changing. I'm even trying to be more sensitive to what I do that impacts not only how my gut feels, but also the health of my gut. And I should be clear that I don't have any diagnosed gut issues and I'm incredibly grateful for that because I know people who do.
Dave Paul 4:28
I can't even imagine what it's like going through life. Dealing with that kind of chronic issue impacting your gut. So there's nothing going on that is clinically diagnosable, just I'm sensitive to how my gut feels. Turns out

Why does the host describe himself as “gut‑sensitive” and how does that shape his perspective on health?

Dave Paul 4:48
Gratefully. Walking, a consistent habit of walking is incredibly beneficial to gut health. And there are five ways that I want to talk about in this episode. Walking consistently aerobic exercise. actually changes the type of bacteria Yeah, our gutters clinical research. that indicates that regular exercise, walking, walking consistently, walking with some intensity, regular exercise actually increases good gut bacteria. It's changing your gut microbiome when you're walking. This is a good thing. Number two. Walking triggers peristosis. Peristasis. Not entirely sure how to pronounce that term, but what it means is the motility of our gut, how well our gut is working in pushing food through the intestines.
