What is the purpose of the 30‑Day Walking Challenge and today’s intro?

Dave Paul 0:03
Is this the best benefit of all when it comes to walking? Hi I'm Dave, welcome to Walking Is Fitness, a daily ten minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added encouragement. and motivation to get out, take the walk, and more importantly, to keep going to build that life-changing walking habit. Today's ten minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes, the ST6. These are minimal shoes, wide toe box. All the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need: minimal shoes, maximal cushion.

They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes. All right, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, TopoAthletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com.

Day nine of the 30-day walking challenge, and I want to talk about what I think is perhaps the best benefit of all when it comes to walking.

How does Dave’s new Topo Athletic shoes and wide toe box affect his walk?

Dave Paul 1:59
I'm going to share with you three stories, three people who are doing the 30-day walking challenge. And there's a common thread that runs through each one of these. And when I'm done the three stories, see if you can figure out what where I'm going to land the plane on. what I think is the best benefit of walking. So it is day nine. If you started on Monday, June 1st, not everybody did, including this listener in Canada. Good morning Dave, the walking whisperer. I'm on day twelve of walking, very shortly heading out, because I got inspired by your YouTube videos and I couldn't wait to start. I needed this prodding so badly and finally the day came after a few of your videos that I got myself together and pushed.

What I love is the permission to focus on Only ten minutes. And you just made it seem not only doable But explained that even that brief time would give wonderful benefits. My walks have been minimal thirty minutes because it feels so good to be out. Where the ten minutes encouragement helps are the days when I find it a little harder to actually get out. But with the ability to say to myself, Come on, it's only ten minutes. I get the push to get out. After that the duration is up to me and this has helped so much. Thank you, Dave. Now it's time to get those ten minutes in and see where these running shoes will take me. Blessings from Ontario, Canada. Story number two. Good morning, Dave. March into April I got very sick.
Dave Paul 3:46
And I was in the hospital for 10 days. I came out 10 pounds lighter than before I was sick. I was so weak, I had to have physical therapy to be able to walk more than two to three minutes. This was so discouraging for me. You see, I'm only 46. And for my birthday, my mom got me the 40-40 challenge, and I wasn't able to finish it. It made me so depressed that I couldn't. and walk a mile a day for 40 days that I ballooned back up to eight pounds heavier. than before I was sick. The funny part is, oftentimes, my 10 minutes with you turns into a few more podcasts, followed by my walking playlist, and I find I'm getting between a mile and a half and two miles at least three days a week. Today and yesterday, not so much, got that colonoscopy prep.
Dave Paul 4:42
And that's Aaron. Alright, number three. And this was a comment that was left to one of the actually it was the 30-day challenge, the 30-day walking challenge, YouTube video. One of my favorite comments of all time.
