What is the “first step” concept and why does it matter for walking habits?

Dave Paul 0:03
Today we're gonna talk about the first step. and how that first step, depending on circumstances, can feel different. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking as Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with motivation and encouragement to get out the door, take the first step in creating a life-changing walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion.

They've got road shoes, trail shoes. recovery shoes, race shoes. Alright, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out, try them on.

How do the new Topo Athletic ST6 shoes feel when you first try them on?

Dave Paul 1:11
Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, TopoAthletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com.

Aloita ilmainen kokeilu Shopify.com-sivustolla

It just occurred to me literally sixty seconds ago. that I'm probably two weeks ahead of when this episode should actually air. So it is July 6th in two weeks, 14 days. It's July 20th. And being the space geek that I am, July 20th is the anniversary of the first walk on the moon. It's when Apollo 11, Buzz Aldrin, and Neil Armstrong landed on the moon and then about five hours later left their lunar module and Walked on the moon.

What different emotions can the first step trigger after a long car ride or meeting?

Dave Paul 2:56
Neil Armstrong, of course, took that first step on the lunar surface. That's one of those days on the calendar that I always notice every year. Most years that I've done this podcast, because it was all about walking on the moon, I've done some sort of theme about that, and this probably would have been perfect for July 20. But I'm two weeks in advance, two weeks ahead of myself on this. But I'm really excited about this topic. There's an inspiration for this topic that happened in the moment that I'll tell you about near the end. So I want to talk about the first step. There are different circumstances in life where we take the first step, and depending on what those circumstances are. it can conjure up different feelings.
Dave Paul 3:50
For example, I've got nine here. For example, the number one, the first step after a long car ride. You're going on vacation, you've been in the car. For hours. You stop and you get out of the car that first step. Or you've been in a long meeting that just seemed to go on and on and on. When the meeting's over and you stand up and you take that first step. For me, that first step always felt like relief. Ah, this feels good. been in the car for a long time and and I get out and I take that first step and it just feels so good. There's a relief that I feel in that first step. Number two. There are times when that first step has been actually is annoying. These would be, I'm sitting usually in my comfortable brown leather chair.
Dave Paul 5:00
And I've kinda settled in, not for hours, but for a little bit. Maybe I'm gonna read, maybe I'm gonna watch something. I've settled in and for some reason I have to get up to do something that I wasn't planning on, wasn't expecting.
